nly once in the entire
Torah is there a refer-
ence to a "successful
man." That man was
Joseph and in this week's
portion he is described as
an ish mazliach—a suc-
cessful man. (Genesis
39:1-2).
What is success? In our
age and culture, success is
usually and mistakenly
associated with material
achievements, with power,
money, prestige and popu-
larity. That is the contem-
porary definition of suc-
cess—the criteria used for
the "movers and shakers"
of our society.
Yet, the Torah uses very
different and far more
profound criteria in for-
mulating the Jewish defi-
nition of success. That def-
inition can be found in
examining Joseph's life
story, our current biblical
reading.
Joseph, very early in
life, faced three critical
tests. They represent, in
microcosm, the types of
crises and challenges
experienced by all of us
during the course of a life-
time.
First, at the tender age
of 17, he was tormented
by his own brothers, torn
away from his family and
banished to an alien envi-
ronment. The love and
care of a doting father is
now replaced by the harsh
demands of a slave-owner.
It is obviously a time of
gloom and doom in his
young life. There are two
options available at such a
moment. One can be over-
come with self pity,
despair and hopelessness;
or one can determine to
make the best of a diffi-
cult situation and face the
future with hope and
faith.
Joseph opted for the lat-
ter. In his hour of misfor-
tune he was imbued with
faith in God and because
"God was with Joseph," he
never lost hope. He
applied himself to his
work; he found the bless-
ing in the curse; he did
the best he could do under
difficult circumstances

and he became an ish
mazliach, a successful
man.
The next crisis provided
Joseph with a serious
moral test. He had to face
the powerful attraction of
the mistress of his new
household and fight
against temptation and
seduction. As the Midrash
indicates, it was a great
challenge; but again,
Joseph succeeded, for as
he faced this moral crisis,
he was not alone. He was
conscious of is moral
responsibilities, of his
presence before the
Almighty, and of his
father's teachings and
legacy. In a determined
and forceful tone he
replied, "How can I do this
great evil and sin against
God?" (Genesis 39:9). He
succeeded once again.
The third and perhaps
the supreme crisis of his
life came when he faced
the powerful Pharaoh and

Shabbat Vayeshev:

Amos 2:6-3:8

brilliantly interpreted his
dreams. From the bottom
of a dark pit he had now
risen to the heights of
fame and success. He was
now about to become the
viceroy of Egypt. All
admired his wisdom.
Once again, Joseph has
succeeded. He has not per-
mitted his meteoric rise in
popularity to corrupt or
compromise his life.
These are the types of
crises we all face in life.
All of us, at one time or
another, fight despair,
battle our conscience and
seek to retain our humili-
ty in the face of success. If
throughout these various
vicissitudes of life we
remember that man is not
alone, that man must be
responsible for all of his
deeds, and that in spite of
all of our achievements
our lives are in the hands
of God, then we, too, like
Joseph will have succeed-
ed.
