hanukah has a major
share in our obser-
vances that lend re-
joicing as well as lear-
ning to our lives. Jews of all
ages take cheer from the
thrills that make the Fes-
tival of Lights a great event
on our calendar and a domi-
nant factor in lesson pro-
viding.
We keep recognizing the
universality of Chanukah in
the appreciation of its mes-
sages which we share with
all mankind. From its very
commencement, with the
Maccabean victories, it was
a Jewish contribution to
civilization. Chanukah
taught religious liberty and
resistance to tyranny. These
concepts have special mean-
ing in the assembled
teachings by Rabbi Philip
Birnbaum in his Jewish
Concepts. For Chanukah, he
enriches us with the follow-
ing:

Chanukah, the post-
biblical festival of
lights, which is annual-
ly celebrated for eight
days, beginning on the
twenty-fifth of Kislev,
commemorates the
heroic struggle of the
Jews against pagan
forces at the time of the
religious persecutions
by the Greco-Syrians, a
struggle which proved
decisive in forming the
character of the Jewish
people.
The Maccabean great
victories, in 168-165
before the common era,
eventually led to the
religious freedom and
national independence
of the Jews, inspiring
many subsequent gen-
erations to face perse-
cution with triumphant
courage.
The lighting of the
candles on the eight
days of Chanukah, one
on the first day and one
more on each succeed-
ing day, is linked in the
Talmud with the mira-
cle of the cruse of oil:
When the Hasmoneans
prevailed against the
heathen foes, they
found in the Temple
only one undefiled
cruse of oil, intact, with
the seal of the high
priest. This cruse con-

tained sufficient oil for
one day's lighting of
the Temple menorah,
but, miraculously, its
oil lasted for eight
days' lighting.
The following year,
they designated these
eight days for giving
thanks and praise to
God. The rededication
of the Temple, after its
defilement by pagan
worship of Greek gods,
occurred in the year
165 before the common
era.

The message of Chanukah
gives special emphasis to
Jewish duties to defend and
to protect independence and
the security of Israel.
The latter role was given
consideration in my first
volume, Without Malice
1978. It contained my
column from "Purely Com-
mentary" of Dec. 1974. It
needs to be restated.

Chanukah's tradition-
al message of "not by
might nor by power" is
no longer unchal-
lenged. Always tem-
pered by a person's
obligation to defend
himself when under
attack, the new duty to
resist murderers is
more pressing than
ever in history.
While emphasizing
faith and the spirit of
justice that must pre-
vail in civilized society.
Chanukah compels its
celebrants to take to
the sword in the con-
frontation with the
murderers.

Neither the Arabs nor
the nations of the world
who support them can
ever be forgiven for the
harm already being
plotted against the
Jewish state.

blot on mankind.
Twenty Arab nations,
possessing more wealth
oil-wise than the rest of
the world, would crush
the smallest of the
nations in the world.
The vastness of Arab
wealth as contrasted
with the rest of
mankind now in a state
of submissiveness was
described here recently
by Abba Eban in the
following statement
which reaffirms
Maccabean rejection of
dangers from enemy
ranks:
"The Arab nation of
which the Palestinians
are a part—forms three
percent of the human
race but it has 16 per-
cent of the votes in the
United Nations and a
virtual hold on 30 more
