He replied that because of his age and lack of understand- ing of the language and cul- ture, he might not be able toy - achieve all of his goals in Is- rael. However, he felt through hard work and determination, he could insure that his chil-' dren would have a successful life in Israel. Hearing their stories about. life in Ethiopia was truly fas- cinating. I was especially in- trigued about the tales of arranged marriages and men- strual huts. Ademasu ex- plained to me that for seven days while a woman is men- struating, she must live in a separate building from her family. For these days, no one is allowed to visit or speaks_ with her. If someone does vis-_ it her then he too must live in' a separate but for one day. Some of my most memo rable moments in Israel oc- curred while I sat with the Ethiopians and a map of Ethiopia and listened to their fantastic tales of their jour-( ney from their homeland through the Sudan to Israel. Some of the most j memorable moments came from the Ethiopians. To hear how they lived minimal food and water an in constant fear of thieves inspirational. When I aske what would happen if som one discovered that they we Jewish in the Sudan, Adem su replied, "We would be • mediately killed." Many of the students in group still had relatives li ing in Ethiopia. One boy, A alleh, was suffering, beta his parents were still i Ethiopia and he had no id if they were dead or aliv One day we received ne that his parents were alive Ethiopia, but he refused to lieve it. Two weeks later, t counselor in our group r ceived a call that a mirac had happened — Ayalle parents were at the airpo As the Ethiopian immigr tion nears completion I thankful that I was able to ol, serve it from the inside.
