Observing the family cul-
ture at the absorption center
is extremely intriguing. In
Ethiopia, the father was the
main authority figure, but in
Israel the situation is in dis-
array because the children
are under the grasp of Israeli
language and culture while
the parents live among
Ethiopians all day in the ab-
'Sorption center.
In addition to the absorp-
tion center, I was also fortu-
nate to work at a youth
village, Nave Amiel, which
was 80 percent Ethiopian.
There were seven other peo-
ple from my program as-
signed to work at the village
for a month and a half. We
were all given groups with
which we would spend the
majority of our time.
My group consisted of 39
Ethiopian boys that had been
in the country for just over
one year. The trend now is for
Ethiopian immigrants to re-

like many of the early
Ethiopians who adopted Is-
raeli names, the majority of
my group retained their
names. As you might imagine,
with names like Ademasu,
Begachaw, Addisu and
Mehabaw, I had a difficult
time adjusting.
They ranged in age from
14-22. Since birthdays don't
carry the same significance in
•Ethiopia as they do else-
where, most only had a gen-
eral idea as to their own
birthdates.
My group possessed study
habits that would certainly
make a Jewish mother proud.
They frequently studied by
candle light and flashlight
once the lights were turned
off in the dorms. Incredibly,
during a hike, half of the
group brought homework.
Throughout the entire four-
hour hike, a group of five or
six kids surrounded me and
asked me the English word
for every object that we saw.
