MASSAGE page 104
Unlike adult massage,
where the emphasis is mus-
cles, infant massage stress-
es touch and skin sensations.
It can affect the baby in nu-
merous positive ways, in-
cluding improved digestion
(by relaxing the stomach)
and better sleeping patterns.
Colicky babies respond es-
pecially well to massage,
Mrs. Joseph said.
A number of hospitals use
massage in their intensive
care neonatal units, she not-
ed. It has been shown to help
premature babies gain
weight, and teaches the in-
fants, often poked and prod-
ded with needles and
medical equipment, "that all
touch isn't painful." ❑

The infamous "White
Paper" issued by the British
Mandate authorities in
1939, severely restricted
Jewish immigration to
Palestine, and prompted
David Ben-Gurion to
remark,"We will fight
Hitler as if there were no
White Paper, and the White
Paper as if there were no
Hitler."
