PEOPLE ARE
POSITIVE ABOUT
FRANKLIN BANK.

Oa.

I financed my first truck at
Franklin Bank eight years ago.
Now I have over twenty and
I'm still with Franklin. 9 9

Stability and lasting relationships are
important to a small business or practice.
That's why so many of them have turned to
Franklin Bank.

We value your business in a way big banks
don't seem to. And we want to be your
banker for a good, long time. So we treat
you right, with services and attention
tailored to your needs. Like commercial
checking with the lowest fees in
metropolitan Detroit. And banking hours
that fit your schedule.

speak of Jewish living when
we sit in our homes, when we
walk on our way, when we lie
down, when we rise up, that
we might remember to live
Jewishly. If we don't have the
knowledge to be able to speak
to our children about ways to
live Jewishly, then in one gen-
eration, we as a people will
not remember how to live
Jewishly. Once we have for-
gotten, the future of our peo-
ple in America is bleak.
What then is the treatment
for the disease? Innovative,
creative, experientially fun
Jewish education. We must
pull together as one commu-
nity, one team in search of a
way to make up for lost time.
That means: Federation, syn-
agogues, Jewish Community
Center , all Jewish agencies.
We must educate the genera-
tion that lost its chance when
it was young so that there can
be reinforcement at home for
the improved education pro-
gram offered to their children.
We must develop educational
programs for the whole fami-
ly that are stimulating, excit-
ing and fun, while rich in
Judaic content. We must of-

fer concrete tools for Jewish
living and model the innate
incentives inherent in living
a Jewish way of life.
We have not survived these
many thousands of years be-
cause our way of life was
somehow inferior to other
ways of life. We need not have
an inferiority complex all too
often disguised as a shallow
superiority complex. We need
only be proud of the knowl-
edge we begin to process in
the form of life-enriching val-
ues and meaningful obser-
vances.
Each of our lives can be
made more fulfilling by com-
mitted Jewish living. If we
can design programs aimed
across the generations that
can once again infuse our peo-
ple with a love for Jewish liv-
ing, and then, if we can
inspire our people to give Ju-
daism a second chance, then,
God willing, our people will
see renewed life, and our
world will be a richer place. ❑

legs. The rabbi says his
friendship with one of the set-
tlers clouded his objectivity
and that it is always a mis-
take to support acts of vio-
lence.
But he believes he has act-
ed responsibly on Crown
Heights. "I want to be con-
vinced that if, God forbid,
there is another incident like
this, Jews will be protected.
And I'm not sure yet."
Many New York Jews
aren't sure yet, either, about
Rabbi Weiss. They may ad-
mire his courage and motiva-
tion but would prefer that he
take a lower profile if his true
goal is peace. Rabbi Weiss
says he is aware of these feel-
ings, that his activities make
some Jews feel vulnerable.
But he says "if we don't speak
out and get justice now,
there'll be more Crown
Heightses in the future."
Whether you see Rabbi
Weiss as an embarrassment
or a hero says a great deal
about your views on Jewish
activism. But one thing is cer-
tain. The fear and anger over
Crown Heights has not gone
away and the Jewish corn-
munity needs to convince the
city government that it will
not abide cover-ups or inac-
tion over the lack of protec-

tion during the riots. Mayo
Dinkins owes the Jewish com-
munity — and every citizen of
New York — an explanation
and an investigation. And un-
til that happens, Avi Weiss
like him or not, will keep on
speaking out. 0
