Laugh To The Bank
With 'Frozen Assets'

MICHAEL ELKIN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

ith Frozen Assets,
producer/co-writer
Don Klein hopes
audiences will be
laughing all the way to the
bank.
The film's bank deposits,
however, are not the kind
the FDIC is willing to in-
sure. The comedy's focus is
on a sperm bank, where
"assets" inspire the interest
of young infertile couples.
A literary agent for the
past 14 years, Don Klein
conceived the idea of the
sperm bank as the center of
a conflict between an ideal-
istic biologist (Shelley Long)
and an ambitious capitalist
(Corbin Bernsen) hoping to
capitalize on the bank as a
profit-making venture.
The topic came right out of
the headlines, says Mr.
Klein, who is hoping to
make headway with au-
diences in the mood for a
Frank Capra-esque romantic
comedy.
"It's a sexy subject," says
Mr. Klein, citing statistics
that one couple out of six is
infertile to some degree.
Frozen Assets is Don
Klein's baby, his first project
as producer and screen-
writer. "It's a different take

W

on family values," he says of
the film.
A pregnant pause. "It's sex
in the '90s for people incapa-
ble of having babies."
Single himself, the 40-
year-old Mr. Klein helped
create a family aura for the
film: His mom portrays a
New York madam and his
nieces appear in other roles.
If the occasion arose, Mr.
Klein says, he would con-
sider using a sperm bank
himself. For now, he con-
tents himself with the
closeness of his immediate
family.
He put his own assets in
Frozen Assets as well as
those of others. Was it worth
it? "I've attained a dream,"
says Mr. Klein.
Certainly, the New York
University Law School
graduate never dreamed of
being in show business. Or
did he? "Well, even in
school," he says, "I wrote
and produced student
shows."
More than anything, Don
Klein has gotten a good
laugh out of the film, a sense
of joy he hopes his audiences
share. "What could be wrong
with a little comedy and
laughter today.
