Nina said. There are a few
brothels in Haifa and
Jerusalem, she added.
Prostitutes at Tel Baruch
say they can earn as much as
1,500 shekels (about $550) a
night, turning as many as 10
or more tricks. One Tel
Baruch hooker is known to
have AIDS, they say, but she
keeps on working, and no
government authority has
done anything to stop her.
Police keep tabs on the
hookers and bust them occa-
sionally to find out about
their pimps or drug sup-
pliers or other suspected
crimes, but usually let them
go after a few hours, Nina
continued. (Israel's National
Police Headquarters re-
ferred questions about pros-
titution to the Tel Aviv
Police, which refused to
discuss the matter at all.)
Virtually all prostitutes
get beaten up from time to
time by their pimps,
customers and/or the police,
Nina said. One hooker was
found murdered over the
summer at Tel Baruch, and
a Russian immigrant prosti-
tute was killed in Jerusalem
about a year ago. The Rus-
sian streetwalker had been
saving money to go back to
her country and was killed
by her pimp, who took her
cash and escaped back to
Russia with another woman,
Nina noted.
The "Russian mafia" of
immigrant pimps and prosti-
tutes gets written up in the
newspapers frequently. The
only distinguishing factor
about Russian hookers is
that, unlike about two-thirds
of veteran Israeli prosti-
tutes, they do not use drugs,
Nina said.
The public's stereotype of a
prostitute is either a Rus-
sian who became a hooker
out of economic desperation,
or a poor Sephardi girl who
got into the life to support
her drug habit. In fact, pros-
titutes in Israel cut across
all ethnic lines — Sephardi
and Ashkenazi, Jewish and
Arab -- and include some
from abroad who work here
for awhile.
A large number of them
fast on Yom Kippur. Some
light candles on Shabbat,
and you'll see them make
the gesture of touching a
mezuzah,
In discussing his hopes for
a future Jewish State,
Theodor Herzl once said it
should be a "normal" coun-
try, and that one sure sign
would be the presence of
Jewish prostitutes. Herzl
can rest easy; by his stan-
dard, if by few others, Israel
is indeed a normal coun-
try. ❑
