behind the counter dressed
demurely in a suit and ruffl-
ed blouse, with pearls around
her neck.
This youthful nonegenerian
has met numerous visitors
from all over the world — and
she can converse with them in
Yiddish, Hungarian, Italian,
French or English.
Born in Hungary, she lived
to see almost her entire fam-
ily wiped out in the
Holocaust. "All my family
was deported to Auschwitz,"
she says. "So I had to make a
new generation here."
She did. She and her hus-
band married in 1924 and
they raised seven children.
Today she's a great-grand-
mother, with sons and grand-
sons who are rabbis.
She's also a hardworking
shop owner, who comes to the
store promptly at 9 a.m. every
day and who is especially pro-
ud of the antique silver
Judaica pieces on display.
Jewish visitors are de-
lighted to discover this shop,
which is just across the street
from the lakeside promenade.
"Every day people are coming
in who are looking for
Judaica," says Reisi Fried-
mann, a friend of Mrs. Galit-
zky who has worked in the
shop for 14 years. "I stay
young working near Mrs.
Galitzky," she says with a
smile.
Both she and Serena Galit-
zky have met many Jewish
visitors over the years.
"When they see Judaica in
the window, people come in,
and then they're happy to
speak with Jewish people.
They ask, 'Where is the
synagogue? Can we buy
kosher meat here?' They ask
all kinds of questions about
Jewish life."
This is one good place to
find answers. Both Serena
Galitzky and Reisi Fried-
mann are longtime members
of the Jewish community in
Lugano and happy to meet
Jews from other places.
"When you come into this
shop, you are a friend, not a
customer," says Ms. Fried-
man.
Another Jewish-owned
store where visitors can learn
more about Jewish Lugano is
Modabella, a women's cloth-
ing store that's also in the
heart of town near the post
office.
Inside, owner Elio Bollag
willingly takes time out from
his busy schedule to talk
about Jewish Lugano.
"When tourists come to our
synagogue, they're surprised
— sometimes even flabber-
gasted — to find such a
religious community in a
cosmopolitan resort," says Mr.
