The German embassy has
been very busy as Ameri-
cans have anxiously re-
sponded to anti-foreigner
and anti-Semitic activity in
the reunified country. On
the embassy's hot seat is
counselor Christian Pauls,
whose portfolio includes
outreach to American Jew-
ish groups.
"Jews," he said, "have
been very concerned about
the public outbursts, anti-
Semitism and desecration of
Jewish memorials, and
clearly feel that there has
been a lack of response from
Bonn."
He said that the embassy
has welcomed offers from
such Jewish groups as the
Anti-Defamation League,
B'nai B'rith and the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee to
help Chancellor Helmut
Kohl's government educate
Germans about the impor-
tance of tolerance and
pluralism in a democratic
system.
Jewish leaders are also
talking with embassy offi-
cials about lax German ex-
port controls that have fuel-
ed the arms race in the Per-
sian Gulf region, and about
their fears that German
firms, facing a declining
economy, will accelerate
efforts to rebuild Iran's
military machine.
Mr. Pauls said that "most"
of the embassy's mail about
the anti-foreigner disorders
has come from Jewish
Americans.
"Some," he said, " say
things like, 'I knew this
would happen; Germans will
always be Germans.' Many
others deplore what has
happened, but make the
point that we are not the
only society beset by
violence."
Mr. Pauls has good creden-
tials for dealing with a wor-
ried Jewish community. He
has lived in Israel, where his
father was the first West
German ambassador, and
his extensive contacts there
go back 25 years.
"He is very accessible and
open to input," said an offi-
cial with a major Jewish
group.
