Local Students Sing
With Kenny Rogers

CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ

LOCAL COLUMNIST

M

any local students
performed with
Kenny Rogers
last week as part of
the Kenny Rogers "Magic of
the Season" show at the Fox
Theatre in Detroit.
Jennifer Weingarten of
Grosse Pointe Woods was
one of five children who were
chosen to sing and perform
on stage with Mr. Rogers.
More than 150 students
auditioned for the role. The
eight-year-old daughter of
Jeffrey and Janet We-
ingarten not only displayed
her musical talents on stage,
but her athletic ability was
showcased when she used
rollerblades.
Jennifer confessed that she
wasn't nervous. She is com-
fortable on stage because she
performs regularly with the
Grosse Pointe Children's
Theatre and Paper Bag Pro-
ductions. She plays
Woodstock in the current
Paper Bag Production of

Snoopy.

"She is really a self-
motivated child. She spends
lots of time in her room
listening to Barbara Strei-
sand and musical scores, "
said her mother.
"I'm having a good time,"
said Jennifer, noting that
she likes her hairstyle in the
show and the way she
pretends to ice skate. It's not
surprising that Jennifer
knows what she wants to be
when she grows up. "An ac-
tress," she stated.
The Andover High School
Chamber Singers, under the

Jennifer Weingarten

direction of choral director
Bruce Snyder, was the
only other group chosen to
sing with Kenny Rogers.
The 25-member group also
performed a solo number.
The Chamber Singers in-
clude: Erin Schwartz,
Sarah Tigay, Jenny Kief,
Jenny Kim, Craig Daitch,
Coreen Duffy, Doug
Rochen, Mary Wirthlin,
Mike Gurion, Samir Gup-
ta, John Tang, Arnold
Cho, Rebecca Gans,
Stephanie Jefferson,
Carla Sabbagh, Michelle
Kunz, Tony Neal, Pat
Cress, Andy Roberts,
Amy Crowley, Lakshmi
Wakade, Gordon Smith,
Mike Swisher, Bobby
Singaracharlu and Jan
Hollander.
