992 marks the 91st year ofJewish National Fund. Although people know that JNF plants trees and distributes blue
boxes, much ofJNF's activities remain unfamiliar to many in the Jewish community. Indeed, JNF has planted mil-
lions of trees, but the responsibilities and accomplishments ofJNF cover a much broader spectrum.
In an effort to tell the entire community who we are and what we do, the JNF regional council has adopted a new
communication format Beginning with this edition of The Jewish News, JNF will publish a News From JNF Page 6 times
each year. We hope these updates will educate and inform readers about JNF's past accomplishments, present activities
and future goals.
We have much to tell. JNF's history is rich in achievement and its future is bright with promises. We hope these updates will serve to
encourage community involvement and education to the strong base of support that JNF is fortunate to have in the Metropolitan De-
troit area. We invite the response of our readers and hope these updates will become the broad-based and cooperative effort of many
caring and involved people.
As I noted above, there are many people who know JNF only as the organization responsible for planting trees in Israel. However, JNF
does much, much more. JNF can count the following among its many accomplishments:
• construction of over 3,800 miles of roads and other infrastructure throughout Israel;
• reclamation of over 650,000 acres of land from the desert;
• creation of more than 100,000 home sites in over 1,000 settlements;
• progress in building 25 major water reservoir projects which will prove vital to the long-term survival of our people in Israel;
• construction of 94 major park and recreation areas needed to provide a better quality of life for Israel's population; and
• of course, planting trees. To date, we have planted over 200 million to help make the desert bloom.
JNF is the guardian of the land of Israel and has the responsibility for preparing, developing and maintaining the land for all the resi-
dents of Israel. Clearly, all this requires large sums of money. At the JNF Annual Leadership Conference held recently in New York, I
joined with JNF leaders from around the country in learning that the worldwide JNF budget for the coming year will exceed $250 Mil-
lion. All of us in attendance agreed that meeting this goal will present both a formidable challenge and a unique satisfaction once
achieved.
As members of the Jewish community, we understand the obligation of Tzedakah, right action through charitable deeds. We support
Israel and our people in Israel because it is the right thing to do. By providing support to develop land, create home sites, provide water,
and plant trees we are all helping to do what is right.
JNF needs the support of the entire Jewish community. It is our hope that News From JNF will encourage readers to call the JNF office
to learn more about JNF. We welcome any comments, questions or suggestions and ask that you direct any such ideas to Ed Rosenthal,
our Regional Director, at 557-6644.
We hope and trust that you will find that support for and involvement with JNF is right for. ❖
