says.
Mrs. Schaffer's favorite
subjects are her son, a Uni- .
versity of Michigan senior
who plans to attend optom-
etry school (his applications
are stacked neatly in Mom's
office), and Judaism.
For much of their lives,
the Schaffers had but a cur-
sory interest in religion.
Then it came time for their
son's bar mitzvah. By
chance, Rabbi Moshe Palter
of Bais Chabad of Birming-
ham-Bloomfield Hills came
for glasses. Mr. Schaffer
asked, "Do you know anyone
who can give my son bar
mitzvah lessons?" The rab-
bi did indeed. Himself.
Three years ago, Rabbi,
Polter and a challah
changed Mrs. Schaffer's life.
The rabbi brought the
Schaffers a challah for Shab-
bat. Soon after, the couple
agreed to attend the annual
Lubavitch dinner. Mrs.
Schaffer became friends
with Mrs. Polter — a friend-
ship that was key in her re-
newed interest in Judaism.
Today, the Schaffers are
active at Bais Chabad of
West Bloomfield. Mrs.
Schaffer is on the board of
directors of Akiva Hebrew
Day School and is a member
of the advisory council for
the Synagogue Campus of
Living Judaism (the pro-
posed Lubavitch campus
west of the Jewish Commu-
nity Center) and of Women's

American ORT and the Na-
tional Council of Jewish
QUESTION: How has rediscover-
ing Judaism changed your life?

Women.
"I was very content, but as
a middle-aged woman you
always ask those questions
— 'What am I doing here?'
`What is the purpose of my
life?' — and little by little I
found them being answered
by Judaism.
"I started by listening to
tapes by Maths Friedman, I
read books (My Prayer,
which explains the Siddur,
was extremely helpful), I
spent Shabbat with friends.
"My life began to have
more purpose than ever. Ju-
daism greatly improved our
family life and personal re-
lationships. Before, things
were very good, but Judaism
enhanced it.
"I also enjoy the bonding
with other women. Frum
women are the greatest in
the world — knowledgeable,
kind and friendly. I feel as
though I were back in col-
lege, our conversations are
so stimulating.
"I always remember the
household of my grand-
mother, who was Orthodox.
Those were some of the hap-
piest days of my life. Now, I
have that same feeling of
community. Practicing Ju-
daism gives you a sense of
right and wrong and helps
you see beyond this life." ❑
