LOCAL COLUMNIST W hen former Detroiter Julie Orman thinks of the Boston subway, she has fond memories. While working for the Boston Jewish Federation, Julie was riding the subway and reading an article about Israeli politics. Computer analyst Steve Schaffer noticed what she was reading and started a con- versation. Steve and Julie got off at the same station and have remained in step. They are now engaged to be married. The intra-state romance becomes more complicated, since Julie now attends chi- ropractic school in Atlanta. The subway romance was first reported by Barbara Brillant of the Boston Jew- ish Advocate, who is a friend of the couple. Ms. Brillant is positive that the future chi- ropractor will make the right adjustments. Julie is the daughter of Ceci Or- man-Stone and the late Steve Orman. A June wed- ding is planned at the Bloomfield Hills home of Ceci and Willie Stone. CHANUKAH BAZAAR The Nortwest Child Rescue Women Jr. League will be having their 19th annual charity gift, bazaar on Sun- day, Dec. 6, and Monday, Dec. 7, at the Jewish Com- munity Center in West Bloomfield from 10 a.m. un- til 5 p.m. It will feature unique gift items such as jewelry, hand-painted items, antiques, accessories and personalized gifts. All pro- ceeds go directly to support the Special Needs Program at the JCC. Beverly Gor- don and Cynthia Lupiloff are co-chairmen. HAVEN BENEFIT HAVEN (Help Against Violent Encounters Now), an Oakland County shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, will hold their annual benefit on Dec. 7 at the Troy Marriot Hotel. The event will feature a celebrity fashion show, with fashions from Linda Dresner and Carl Sterr and modeled by celebrities. Tickets for the event are $150, which in- cludes cocktails, dinner and a fashion show. All proceeds benefit the HAVEN. For more information call HAVEN at 334-1284. JUNIOR LEAGUE Harry and Marjorie Nederlander recently lent their names as honorary chairs to help the Junior League of Birmingham launch its annual fund- raiser, the 1992 Holiday Benefit.
