JNF Reception
For Chile

Jerusalem (JTA) — The chief
forester of the Chilean
Forestal Corporation was in
Israel last week in an effort
to upgrade official ties bet-
ween the afforestation
department of Chile and the
Jewish National Fund of
Israel.
An official agreement has
existed between the two
countries for almost 10
years, but it was more a for-
mality that never translated
into actual cooperation pro-
jects.
The forester, Julio Garcia,
was accompanied by Chilean
Ambassador Marcos Alvarez
for a meeting with Moshe
Rivlin, chairman of JNF's
board of directors, and David
Nahmias, director of Israel's
Land Development Au-
thority. Together they
discussed possible areas of
cooperation and exchange
programs.
The soil in the northern
half of Chile is arid, with a
high content of salt, similar
to that in Israel's south.
Chile also suffers problems
of water management, ero-
sion and soil preservation.
Chile hopes to profit from
research JNF has carried
out in this field, which ex-
tended to creation of new
techniques and advances in
soil acculturation.

Quick Reaction
Halts Tragedy

Jerusalem (JTA) — Coura-
geous action by a quick-
thinking driver averted possi-
ble tragedy after a Palesti-
nian terrorist stabbed a teen-
age boy at a bus stop in north-
ern Jerusalem.
Arni Messika jumped from
his car and pursued the at-
tacker after hearing shouts
of "terrorists, terrorists"
from a boy and two women
running down a road in the
French Hill section of the
city.
The 15-year-old boy,
stabbed by a man shouting
"Allahu akhbar (Allah is
great)," sustained a slight
shoulder wound. The
assailant was identified as a
resident of Ramallah in the
West Bank.
Mr. Messika, a gardener,
warned the attacker that he
would shoot, although he
had no weapon with him. He
then knocked the terrorist
down. The terrorist reached
for his own gun just as a se-
cond passerby joined the
fray. helping Mr. Mesqika.
