classrooms and the library.
Then we go up the second
floor for a quick look into one
of the bedrooms. While some
of them live in this house,
others live in a converted dor-
mitory nearby.
The room we enter has dou-
ble bunk beds and colorful
bulletin boards. "This is a
mess right now!" apologizes
Esther Ansbacher, 17, from
Manchester, England, who's
been studying at the desk.
Despite her apologies, it's
clear that she enjoys the
camaraderie and crowded
quarters. "It's very homey
and cozy;' says Esther.
Next we go down to the
ground floor level to see the
computer room, complete
with six computers and a
typewriter.
Those computers and
typewriter get their share of
heavy use. The courses the
girls take include teachers'
training, child psychology and
Jewish philosophy. Their
education involves more than
the classes they take, as
Rabbi Rosen explains after
the girls go off to their next
class.
Every Thursday, for exam-
ple, they make regular visits
to Jewish families in Lucerne
and in nearby Zurich, where
they help with cooking and
even taking care of children.
"We feel it's important for
girls to have some contact
with families," says the rabbi,
who's been teaching here for
nine years.
They also have recreational
activities. Every Rosh
Chodesh — beginning the
new month — they have an
outing of some sort, often a
hike in the nearby
mountains.
Rabbi Rosen sees the tran-
quility and beauty of the
Swiss town as one of the ad-
vantages for a learning en-
vironment. "The tranquility
is very conducive to learning,"
says the rabbi. "I couldn't see
a school like this in Zurich.
But this environment is very
suitable for it."
Rabbi Israel Ehrentreu
agrees. As principal of the
school, he's been involved
with it since its founding 30
years ago — in fact, he was
asked to come to Switzerland
to start the school, which
began in Basel and then mov-
ed to Lucerne a year later.
But whatever they do with
their education, it's clear that
these girls feel they are hav-
ing a unique experience. "You
learn to live and get along
with so many different peo-
ple," says Chaya Sorotkin, 18,
who's from Israel and whose
three roommates in Room #6
upstairs are from Switzer-
land, Vienna, and Israel.
