Visitors here can enjoy a cruise along Lake Lucerne or walk across the covered wooden bridge that spans the lake it's one of the city's most famous landmarks — or take a breathtaking cable car ride to the top of the peak of Mount Pilatus. But besides all these pleasures, Lucerne offers to Jewish travelers the chance to see how this lovely city just an hour away from Zurich also is a center of Jewish learning. "This is a place where Judaism really lives," says Rabbi Kalman Rosen. "You feel the spiritual drive here. And it's a very good environ- ment for Jewish learning." In fact, this small town is home to an international Jewish day school for girls, Beth Jacob Seminary, the only one of its kind in Switzerland, where Rabbi Rosen teaches. A visit to the school to see its facilities and meet the girls who live and study here is an unusual travel ex- perience for visitors. Located on a quiet residen- tial street only 10 minutes from the lakeside, the school is in a stately and old ivy- covered corner building at Schlossweg #1. They give me a friend- ly welcome when I explain that I've come to visit the school. "We're getting experiences here that we wouldn't get anywhere else," says Gittl as they lead the way inside. "Be- ing with so many girls who are of different nationalities, you learn a lot," adds Tsione. Altogether, 60 girls, ages 16 to 18, study here. All are observant Jews. They come from diverse places — Brazil, England, Austria, Canada and the United States.
