Installs Rabbi

T'chiyah Makes
Outreach Plans

The installation of Rabbi
Elliot Pachter as spiritual
leader of Con-gregation
B'nai Moshe will take
place during Shabbat ser-
vices December 19. Rabbi
Pachter was born and
raised in Grand Rapids.
He received his ordination
from the Jewish
Theological Seminary in
1987. He is active in the
local Jewish community,
serving as vice president
of the Michigan Region of
the Rabbinical Assembly,
teaching in the Conserva-
tive Movement Shiur and
at Hillel Day School, and
as a member of the Young
Adult Division Board and
Education Committee of
the Federation. Rabbi
Pachter previously served
as associate rabbi at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
Rabbi Joel Roth, dean of
the Rabbinical School of
the Jewish Theological
Seminary, will deliver the
sermon and serve as the
installing officer. Rabbi
Roth grew up at Congre-
gation B'nai Moshe. He is
also a professor of Talmud
at the Seminary.
A luncheon in honor of
Rabbi Pachter will be
served following services.
Cantor Louis Klein will
present a musical inter-
lude.
There is a charge for the
luncheon. Please call the

tions.

"Disputations," the 15th-
century Spanish practice
of holding public debates
between the "sibling the-
ologies" of the Catholic
Church and Judaism, will
be the focus of Congrega-
tion T'chiyah's "Heimish"
outreach Shabbat evening
service 7:45 p.m. Dec. 11
at the Workmen's Circle
Center, 26341 Coolidge,
Oak Park.
The service, which will
be led by Sharon Ram and
Al Saperstein, will include
a video presentation.
The Reconstructionist
synagogue holds all other
weekly services at its
sanctuary, 1035 St.
Antoine at Monroe in
Greektown. Dr. Sidney
Bolkosky will address top-
ics relating to historical
Jewish Detroit Dec. 4.
Additional outreach ser-
vices will be held at 7:45
p.m. Feb. 5, March 13 and
April 9; and at 10 a.m. on
Jan. 9 and May 1.

Temple Beth El will cele-
brate Chanukah with a
series of event beginning
with two workshops and
culminating in a pre-
Chanukah Shabbat Fam-
ily dinner and service.
On Dec. 6, a 10 a.m.
workshop, "The December
Dilemma," will answer
questions faced by inter-
married families.
On Dec 7 at 1 p.m.,
Rabbi Julian Cook will
present a "Chanukah
Workshop for Moms and
Dads" that will feature
arts and crafts, cooking,
and music.
On Dec. 18, the congre-
gation will greet the holi-
day with a pre-Chanukah
celebration with a Family
Shabbat dinner and a
Shabbat service featuring
the Junior Choir and TBE
Chorale.

Adat Shalom
Family Service

Adat Shalom Synagogue
will hold a Family
Shabbat service 10:30
a.m. Dec. 12. The service
is designed especially for
parents and children to
worship together.
Cantor Howard Glantz
and youngsters from the
Adat Shalom United
Hebrew School classes will
be the leaders.
The services are spon-
sored by the Synagogue's
Jewish Experiences For
Families Committee.

Beth Shalom
Hosts Bazaar

Congregation Beth Sha-
lom will host a Chanukah
gift bazaar 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Dec. 6 at the synagogue.
This annual event will
include gift and craft
booths, and a book sale.
J.E.F.F. children's activi-
ties will begin with
Chanukah crafts in the
morning; a clown, balloons
and entertainment follow
in the afternoon. A chil-
dren's low-priced gift table
will also be provided.
