Berkowitsch also carries
gold chains and mezuzot. Ms.
Felder gets out one mezuzah,
which is on a chain and glit-
tering with small diamonds.
"We have someone in Swit-
zerland making these just for
us," she explains.
The family business is an
example of the Jewish
business presence on the
Banhoffstrasse. Founded in
1917, it's headed by Leo
Berkowitsch, who is now 80
and still involved. But the
ownership and the day to day
operations are now in the
hands of his son, Sigi
Berkowitsch, who does the
buying and supervises the
special orders.
Sometimes the order is for
a custom-made necklace with
a name spelled out in Hebrew
) letters, or a special order Star
of David or mezuzah on a
• chain; for Berkowitsch has a
• loyal following of Jewish
customers. "They know our
reputation so they come to us
for special orders," says Ms.
Felder.
Even though this is one of
the few shops to carry
specifically Jewish items,
other well-known stores and
businesses on the avenue are
also Jewish-owned, including
Weinberg, a high fashion and
quite extensive store one
block from the lake, and Bank
Julius Bar, next door to Guc-
ci at St. Peterstrasse.
The Jewish flavor of the
Banhofstrasse is evident in
the downstairs food depart-
ment of Jelmoli, the popular
department store just one
block off the actual avenue. In
the food department on the
lower level, Jelmoli has a
varied stock of kosher food on
its well-stocked shelves.
One whole section is
stocked with kosher Swiss
cheese — and it's not only for
Zurich's Jewish customers.
"Some of our customers like
the Swiss kosher cheese, even
though they're not Jewish,"
says Sonja Hartmann, a sales-
woman in the food section.
Considering the popularity
of Swiss chocolates, it's not
surprising that there's also a
plentiful assortment of Swiss
kosher chocolates, including
truffles by Maestrani, and
assorted Swiss chocolates
made by Camille Bloch.
Then there are imported
kosher chocolates, including
chocolate-flavored wafers
from Israel.
From Mr. Baranes' informal
falafel stand to the much
more formal and ornate Berk-
owitsch jewelry store, Jewish-
owned businesses add their
own special flavor to Swit-
zerland's Fifth Avenue. El
