How the Jewish community
is responding to the AIDS
epidemic, the latest news
from the health care industry
and the human side of AIDS
will be addressed at the
Jewish Federation Young
Adult Division's AIDS
Awareness Symposium 7 p.m.
Dec. 17 at the Max M. Fisher
Building.
Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg of
Congregation Shir Tikvah;
Joy Schumacher, AIDS pro-
gram coordinator for the
Oakland County Department
of Health; and Susan Efros,
who witnessed her late
brother's fight with the
disease, will speak at the pro-
gram, organized in coopera-
tion with the Michigan ,
Jewish AIDS Coalition
(MJAC).
An advocate for educating
the Jewish community about
AIDS, Rabbi Sleutelberg
believes the community
should be involved actively in
assisting those stricken by it.
Ms. Efros, who is on the board
of MJAC, will discuss some of
the more personal issues
related to AIDS. Ms. Schu-
macher is an instructor at the
Reproductive Institute for the
Oakland County Intermedi-
ate School System. A regis-
tered nurse, she co-chaire
the 1990 conference of the
Women and AIDS Com-
mittee.
MJAC was organized as a
response to AIDS stemming
from the Jewish values of
bikur Choliin = caring for the
sick; p'kvah nefesh — preser-
vation of life; and "tikun
olam," making the world a
better place.
The program is being
organized by the YAD Cul-
tural Awareness Committee,
chaired by David H. Colburn,
Rachel C. Kamerman and
Robert E. Mather.
