PHILIP SLOMOVITZ EDITOR EMERITUS

T

here is little excuse for
not utilizing the mas-
sive libraries pro-
viding knowledge
about our people and our
history. The impressive book
fair, which has become a
Detroit communal guideline
for the entire country to en-
courage reading and acquisi-
tion of Jewish knowledge,
also emerges as a factor in
the encouragement of these
duties.
The bOok fair procedures,
introducing authors and
their works, also indicate
the sources to be respected.
In our community, we keep
benefiting from the
treasures provided for us by
the Wayne State University
Press. So many important
works that have already
been provided for us by the
university's publishing arm
that gratitude for it keeps
increasing. Such immense
gifts to provide for our learn-
ing as Dr. Jacob Marcus'
United States Jewry are the
enduring results of deep
studies. The WSU Press'
emphases on Jewish schol-
arly works are cultural
commitments that are
priorities.
Whatever has been
achieved so far keeps en-
couraging other publishers
to recognize the importance
of the cultural values of Jew-
ish historical treasures. This
has become apparent in the
challenging recollections
published by Putnam of
Abba Eban, one of the most
distinguished Jewish per-
sonalities of the century. We
can anticipate an endless
recognition of the work in
newspapers and periodicals.
Advance notices of the
Eban book, titled Personal
Witness, Israel Through My
Eyes, admonish prospective
reviewers to be ready to deal
with the international issues
that were not only Israeli
but echoed the experiences
of the nations of the world.
Readers will learn of the ex-
pertise of Abba Eban's dip-
lomatic skills, the com-
mitments by this Jewish
leader to his people's des-
tiny, his duties to share in
his people's security and
uninterrupted means of
perpetuating treasured leg-
acies.
It stands to reason that one
must feel compelled to study

Abba Eban is known for his role as a diplomat.

Mr. Eban's book. We can be
assured a history of Zionism,
impressions of the global
reactions to the people
Israel, the struggles for rec-
ognition and the presence of
leadership of world per-
sonalities. From the knowl-
edge of what is offered, we
can guarantee best seller
status for this exciting book.

UHAC As
Publishers

The Union of American
Hebrew Congregations has
added to its valued leader-
ship in Reform Judaism by
publishing important books
for children, many that have
become valuable in studying
Jewish traditions. The latest
offering for adults is Learn
Hebrew Today; Alef Bet for
Adults.
There is an important
Detroit aspect to this book.
Rabbi Paul Yedwab, an as-
sociate rabbi at Temple
Israel, coauthored it with
Rabbi Howard Bogot, direc-
tor of the Department for Re-
ligious Education and
Reform Judaism Commis-
sion on Education at UAHC.
Learn Hebrew Today, with

its creative teaching,
reaches those not only in
Reform Judaism but those
who should be reached in all
areas of Jewish life.

About Bagels

It is always good to write
humor and to encourage it
especially when it is treated
realistically. This time it is
about the realism of the
bagel. One can hardly expect
that this food item would
have the curious conception
of having been described by
a couple named Marilyn and
Tom Bagel.
Published by the Globe
Pequot Press, a new book is
titled The Bagel Bible: For
Bagel Lovers the Complete
Guide to Great Noshing.
What is remarkable about
this book is that its authors
share their knowledge about
bagels on a universal scale
and that they know how to
inject humor into the seri-
ousness of food. Therefore,
let us welcome authors
Marilyn and Tom Bagel as
having added the bagel to a
new significance in the (1,
lighter vein of Jewish eating
and living. 0
