French Artist

(Yvaral, who combines the

poetry of geometry with
figurative art, is the artist
Circle Gallery will present in
the exhibition celebrating the
gallery's opening in the
Somerset Collection, 2801
Big Beaver Road, Troy.
The French artist will be in-
troduced to collectors at a
reception 7-9 p..m. Dec. 1, as
will his portraits of the Mona
Lisa and Marilyn Monroe,
well-known icons who emerge
from seemingly abstract
geometric patterns into fully
defined portraits.
Like his father, Yvaral has
focused on expanding the
boundaries of optical illusion
and has developed his own
theories and artistic response
to the pursuit of the mysteries
of the third dimension.
His formal training was ob-
tained at l'Ecole des Arts Ap-
pliques. In 1960 he co-founded
the GRAY, a group of six
young artists devoted to the
research and application of
visual perception through
geometrics.
Yvaral's mathematic for-
mulas permit the numerical
transposition of figurative im-
[ mages. Monumental size
paintings on the walls of
buildings in Paris have
demonstrated the results of
this process. Examples in-
clude giant installations on
structures located on the rue
du Louvre, Place Vendome
and Rue du Faubourg
Saint-Denis.
Using today's inventions as
his brushes to communicate
his vision, he has created op-
tial effects.
Gallery hours are Sunday,
noon-5 p.m.; Monday, Thurs-
day and Friday, 10 a.m.-9
p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday
and Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
