BABY BACK RIBS

During one of her club
performances, she was seen
by Martin Bergman, a pro-
ducer from England, who
took an interest in her
career and ultimately in
`'her. Four years after they
met and started working
together, they married.
Mr. Bergman brought
-about one performance
change to give her a more
polished and sophisticated
look. He encouraged her to
dress glamorously and set a
style for her act.
"My husband started
picking out my dresses:' she
explained. ''He said, 'Rita,
you're in show business;
why don't you wear some-
' thing that's fancy and more
fun to look at?'
"I had liked long skirts,
Lboots and big sweaters, and
'lie fixed me up a little bit, It
worked."
Off stage, she bares more
of her comic persona in Nak-
ed Beneath My Clothes, a
new book that presents a
,ollection of essays giving
her tongue-in-cheek per-
spective on topics as diverse
as sales, remote controls and
•baby-sitting.
"I never want to write
about show business,"
1asserted the humorist, who
won the 1990 American
Comedy Award for best
female stand-up.
"I never say anything
about show business in my
.act because people don't ex-
perience that every day. I
only want to talk about
things people can relate to."
For instance, she says
softly, "I think men with
pierced ears are better
prepared for marriage;
they've experienced pain
) and bought jewelry."
On a more serious marital
note, she enjoys writing with
her husband, with whom
the collaborated on a movie
that will be released in
December, Peter's Friends.
The British comedy-drama,

"I didn't want to be
mechanical so I had to work
5 really hard to loosen up, talk
to the audience and take
more risks:' she said. "I still
do a pretty structured act
' because I need to know that
if an audience is paying, I'm
going to be funny."
