W
hen Martin Scot
Kosins' dog died,
he felt a tremen-
dous loss. "As a pet
owner, I realized that there
were no books that dealt
with the death of animals,
dogs getting old and when to
end a pet's life, " he said.
To help others cope with
the grieving process he ex-
perienced, Mr. Kosins wrote
Maya's First Rose (Open Sky
Books, $15.95) with illustra-
tions by Howard Fridson
of Huntington Woods and a
foreword by Burl Ives. The
book took three years to
complete and became a labor
of love and a therapeutic ex-
ercise for Mr. Kosins, who
will donate all the royalties
to charities for animals and
children.
"Maya is a heart warming
tale of truth told with deli-
cacy and finesse," wrote Mr.
Ives in the foreword.
Maya's First Rose is the
first book for Mr. Kosins,
who is a musician, a com-
poser and owner of Open Sky
Records. Open Sky Books in
Royal Oak is a branch of his
record company. He had
offers to publish the book
with national companies,
but as Mr. Kosins explained,
"each wanted to make one
change." In order to have
complete control over this
special project, he chose to
publish it himself.
He contacted Howard
Fridson, of Fridson Studios,
for the illustrations and
realized he was a Hun-
tington Woods neighbor.
"This is one project that is
put out in its pure form,"
Mr. Kosins said.
Mr. Kosins dedicated the
book to his dog, Maya, which
is an Indian word meaning
dream or unreal, and to Dr.
Michael Pintar, the veter-
inarian at Orchard Lake
Animal Hospital. Dr. Pintar
made house calls for Maya,
who was his oldest living pa-
tient. "He was very devoted
and did not charge for the
house calls," Mr. Kosins
said.
The book is for adults and
advanced young readers and
is available at major book-
stores.
