Applications are available for
young men and women in
their early 20s for Project Otz-
ma, a volunteer service pro-
gram in Israel for young
adults.
Beginning in August 1993,
participants in the program
will spend the year working
and studying in Israel. On
their return, they will fulfill
a commitment of service to
the Detroit Jewish communi-
ty. Otzma's curriculum is con-
tinually changing to meet the
current needs of Israel
society.
Now in its eighth year, Pro-
ject Otzma (Hebrew for
strength) is designed to
strengthen the bonds bet-
ween North American com-
munities and Israel through
volunteer service. It is coor-
dinated by the Council of
Jewish Federations and ad-
ministered locally through
the Israel Desk of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
The Israel component is
divided into several tracks. In
the beginning, participants
spend 3 1/2 months on a cen-
trally-located kibbutz with an
ulpan course to acquire the
fundamentals of the Hebrew
language combined with in-
tegraton into all aspects of
kibbutz life. Afterward, they
spend seven weeks tutoring
and working with students at
a Youth Aliyah village, which
acts as a home to immigrant
teens and a boarding school
for Israelis. For another seven
weeks, they will work in ab-
sorption (resettlement)
centers with Ethiopian and
Russian families.
Three options are available
for the two-month pioneering
track: working with new im-
migrants from the former
USSR and Ethiopia; volun-
teering on young kibbutzim
in the Arava Desert or the
Galilee; or working in new in-
dustrial sites in developing
areas of the country.
The program will conclude
with a three-month residency
working on community pro-
jects in Detroit's Project
Renewal neighborhood of
Neot Shazar in Yavne. They
live in the project area and
work in service programs,
such as assisting in or after
school, in an absorption cen-
ter, at a community center, or
at a home for the elderly.
Israeli educators, politi-
cians, scientists, authors and
artists meet with the group
throughout the year at semi-
nars, conferences and on
tiyulim (excursions) on
Israel's land, history and
people.
Project Otzma is sponsored
by the Israel Forum and the c'
Council of Jewish Federa-
tions. It is under the local
auspices of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, and funded in part by
the United Jewish Founda-
tion. Co-sponsoring organiza-
tions include the World
Zionist Organization and the
Jewish Agency for Israel.
Informational meetings
will take place in January at
the Hillel offices at the
University of Michigan and
Michigan State University.
For information about Pro-
ject Otzma, call Sivan Maas,
