Temple Israel's annual fund-
raising event, "The Art of
Food and Wine," will be Jan.
16 at the temple.
Forty restaurants will par-
ticipate by providing main
dishes, desserts and wines for
tasting throughout the even-
ing. Scott Stern and the Trust
will provide the entertain-
ment. A silent auction and
raffle will run throughout the
evening. There is a charge.

T'chiyah Hears
Dr. Bolkosky

Chabad Rabbi
Publishes Book

Dr. Sidney Bolkosky, pro-
fessor of history at the
University of Michigan-
Dearborn, will conclude Con-
gregation T'chiyah's fall
speakers series with a discus-
sion about historical Jewish
Detroit 7:45 p.m. Dec. 4 at the
synagogue's main hall in
Greektown, 1035 St. Antoine
at Monroe.
He wrote Harmony and
Dissonance: Voices of Jewish
Identity in Detroit, 1914-1966,
the second volume of the
history of Detroit's popula-
tion, published by Wayne
State University Press and
the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit. Dr.
Bolkosky also is widely
recognized for his expertise
on the Holocaust.
The Sabbath service follow-
ing Dr. Bolkosky's talk will be
led by Harold Gurewitz and
Raina Ernstoff.

Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg of
Bais Chabad Torah Center of
West Bloomfield has recently
published a Hebrew book on
Jewish law called Lichvod
Tzaddik. The book is
dedicated in honor of the
Lubavitcher Rebbe on the oc-
casion of his 90th birthday.
"Lichvod Tzaddik" means
both "in honor of the tzaddik"
and "in honor of 90."
It is a continuation of Rab-
bi Silberberg's 1987 work,

The Adult Study Commission
of Adat Shalom Synagogue
will sponsor a lunch and
learn program following ser-
vices Dec. 5, with an introduc-
tion to the Chanukah season
by Dr. Mark Smiley.
Dr. Smiley, headmaster of
Hillel Day School, will
discuss "Chanukah and the
Talmud." He will explore the
talmudic sources dealing
with Chanukah and trace
some of the historical roots of
many of our modern holiday
customs.
There is a charge, which in-
cludes a kosher lunch.
Future lunch and learn pro-
grams will be March 12 and
June 18. For reservations by
Dec. 3, call the synagogue of-

Zichron Yaakov Kopel on the
Ray's Shulchan Aruch (Code
of Jewish Law).
The Shulchan. Aruch's two
major .components are the
halachic opinions of the Bais
Yosef — Rav Yosef Karo of Saf-
ed, and the Rema — Rabbi
Moshe Isserless of Cracow.
Lichvod Tzaddik consists of
explanations and analyses of
various areas in the Ray's
Shulchan Aruch. It deals
with differences of opinion
between the Ray and other
noted commentaries, such as
the Vilna Gaon, Rabbi Akiva
Eiger, the Aruch Hashul-
chan, and the Mishna Brura.
The 41 essays and 226
pages apply many of the prin-
ciples found in the Ray's
Shulchan. Aruch to contem-
porary issues, including con-
