All of this may sound somewhat craven, but it reflects an important point: Jews who care deeply about a host of issues, from health care reform to religious freedom, see the incoming administration as a tremen- dous opportunity after 12 years of conservative Repub- lican rule. "We have four years," said one Jewish job-seeker who has worked on economic justice issues. "A job in HHS [the Dept. of Health and Human Services] would be good for my career, of course. But it's also a chance to make a real difference. God only knows when we'll have another opportunity like this one." Large Fabric Selection fiNishiNq T he news from Bill Clinton's transition headquarters may be sparse, but at least one sector of the federal estab- lishment is humming. Federal job-seekers have been overloading phone lines with their networking and their FAXed resumes. Jewish organizations and their employees have not been immune from the job- hunting frenzy. "I've been inundated. There's no other word for it," said an official with one major Jewish group here. "Everybody seems to think I can put in a good word for them with the Clinton peo- ple." Informally, some pro- Israel groups are circulating lists of suggested appointees for a wide range of positions. Woodward Birmingham 644-6505 .} Political seers continue to scrutinize the Clinton tran- sition team, looking for hints about the real appointments to follow — the cabinet secretaries and under- secretaries and White House staffers who will shape the new president's policies. So far, Jewish activists here seem to like what they see. On the domestic side, Al From will head the tran- sition effort. Mr. From, a White House staffer under Pres. Jimmy Carter, is a "tough, pro-Israel Jew," says political consultant Mark Siegel. He also backs affirmative action, but op- poses job quotas, which are a litmus-test for the Jewish community. Sandy Berger, a Washing- ton lawyer and a policy planning official in the Carter administration, leads the foreign affairs transition team. And J. Brian Atwood, a former State Department official vvho now heads the National Democratic In- stitute, is in charge of the changeover at Foggy Bottom. "Atwood has very strong connections with the pro- Israel community," said one pro-Israel activist. "He has a reputation as a real friend. His appointment to the tran- sition team should be a signal that Clinton's people will be very sensitive to Israel's needs." Also possibly indicative of the Clinton team's Mideast leanings is the fact that the Department of Justice's transition will be overseen by Peter Edelman. F-15 Maker To Meet with Jews The question of arms sales to foreign governments is about to get more complex as the American defense in- dustry comes to terms with the end of the Cold War. That issue will surely be on the mind of John F. McDonnell, whose name graces the McDonnell- Douglas aircraft company, when he addresses the Con- ference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations sometime in the next few weeks.
