S
even Orthodox rabbis,
including the leaders
of four synagogues, are
supporting a new
organization responsible for
registering mishulochim
who solicit tzedakah in
metro Detroit.
In a letter mailed to
families throughout the
area, Rabbis Reuven
Drucker of Young Israel of
Greenfield, Elimelech Gold-
berg of Young Israel of
Southfield, Avrohom
Jacobovitz of Machon
L'Torah and Dov Loketch of
Congregation Beth Jacob
Mogain Abraham note that
"difficult financial times
have acutely affected so
many families and institu-
tions both here and in
Israel."
They say the new
Tzedakah Enhancement
Project actually will in-
crease charitable donations
because it will "provide our
congregations with the con-
fidence that the causes pre-
sented by individuals or in-
stitutions are worthy, so
that we may respond with a
meaningful contribution."
Through the Project,
mishulochim would be
interviewed by committee
members, then provided
with documents verifying of
with the organiza-
tion they represent.
The Tzedakah Enhance-
ment Project Committee
comprises Rabbi Mordechai
Wolmark, head of the
Merkaz, the laymen's
association of the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis (Vaad
Harabonim), and Rabbis
Shmuel Irons and Dovid
Simcha of the Kollel.
The creation of the Project
follows a decision last month
by the Vaad not to register
mishulochim. That decision
was made out of concern of
possible embarrassment re-
questing a letter of approval
might cause to one soliciting
tzedakah.
Representatives of the
Merkaz and others have
suggested that the commun-
ity also needs to be pro-
tected. Jews are obligated to
