violence Crack Down
I German States

(JTA) — Setting aside
rences, all 16 states of
many have agreed on
gh, new measures to
bat a wave of neo-Nazi
ence.
t the same time, the
rnin.g coalition and the
osition have failed to
- e on a change in the
stitution designed to cur-
the influx of foreigners
Germany.
ut both the Kohl
ernment and the Social
ocratic Party reported
-ess in efforts to reach
eement on curbing a
d of refugees they blame
he upsurge in right-wing
enlist violence.
nder the country's lib-
asylum laws, some 1.4
lion refugees have cross-
into Germany, at a far
her level than that in
hboring European coun-
s.
e new measures to crack
n on violence were
pted Friday by the
for ministers of the 16
man states at a meeting
onn also attended by
eral Interior Minister
dolf Seiters and high-
ing officials of the Bo-
stic security service.
ong the new measures:
Federal police and
der police will be called
promptly when trouble
ses that local or regional
ces cannot handle.
ward that end, the
ernment will recruit
re police and train them
handling riots and
lence against foreigners.
The states will expedite
exchange of data on
. pects in violent attacks
inst hostels for asylum-
•kers.
The federal government
11 expedite transmission to
al police forces of infor-
tion on suspects and ex-
mist organizations.
All major police stations
assign an officer to deal
th complaints by asylum-
- kers.
e government plans to
n a number of extreme
ht-wing organizations,
r. Seiters said. The
erior minister told
porters the ban will clear-
signal Germany's refusal
accept continued neo-Nazi
olence.
Mr . Seiters said the belief
i at the motivation for
olence was economic
ther than ideological had

been proved wrong over the
past few weeks when van-
dals attacked Jewish
memorials and cemeteries.
In a similar vein, the
chairman of the German
Jewish community, Ignaz
Bubis, said that violence is
the first problem to be tackl-
ed, not the influx of refugees.
At the same time, a coali-
tion spokesman urged pop-
ular pressure to force
parliamentary amendment
of the constitution to curtail
the intake of refugees.
Justice Minister Sabine
Leuthheuser said she sup-
ported an "initiative by the
people" to force the
parliamentary factions in
the Bundestag to reach a
compromise, in the face of
inability by the political
leadership to adopt mea-
sures consistent with the
wishes of a great majority of
the Germans.
Meanwhile, the German
Catholic Church has issued
a statement rejecting the use
of violence by the left or the
right, and has denounced
anti-Semitism and hatred of
foreigners.
The statement, issued by
the central committee of the
Catholic Church in Ger-
many, came as left-wing
anarchists fought with right-
wing skinheads in three
German cities over the
weekend. The violence left
one person dead and at least
six others injured.
The declaration was
promptly welcomed by the
Jewish community, and a
spokesman urged that all
German churches unite in a
rejection of neo-Nazi
violence.

Methane Gas
In Galilee

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Abjac
Mazal oil prospecting com-
pany announced that it has
struck methane gas in
"relatively large quantities"
at a drilling site in northern
Galilee.
Methane is viewed as a far
cleaner energy source than
the butane gas commonly
used for cooking in Israel.
Butane is a byproduct of pet-
roleum.
Further testing is needed
to establish the size of the
deposit and its commercial
viability at the site near
Kibbutz Gonen in the Hula
Valley.
