he B'nai B'rith Wo-
men held a special
gifts luncheon on Nov.
1 at Congregation
B'nai Moshe honoring
Judith Deborah Stern
and her family. More than
200 patrons attended the
event, which also marked
the 50th anniversary of the
founding of the Residential
Treatment Center in Israel.
Dr. Mark Smiley, head-
master of Hillel Day School,
gave the invocation and
spoke about Mrs. Stern's
commitment to Jewish life
and how she possesses many
names like Queen Esther
and other Jewish historical
leaders. Many people call
Mrs. Stern Debbie instead of
Judith. Her daughters,
Michelle and Natalie, nat-
urally call her Mom.
Michelle Stern is a Hillel
Day School graduate and is
president of Glazer Chapter
of B'nai B'rith Girls, while
Natalie is a student at
Hillel. Many family mem-
bers attended the event, in-
cluding Mrs. Stern's hus-
band, Max, who also has an-
other name — Mickey.
Libbie Zalenko, presi-
dent of B'nai B'rith Wo-
men's Council of
Metropolitan Detroit, gave a
presentation to the 1991
honorees, Rita and John
Haddow and introduced
the guest speaker, Susan
Bruck, president-elect of
International B'nai B'rith
Women. Sylvia Ross, spe-
cial gifts chairman, in-
troduced Mrs. Stern.
Some of the supporters at

the event included: Judy
Granader, Margo Woll,
Beth Margolin, Rochelle
Peterson, Howard
Tapper, Susan Tapper,
Suzie Harold, Linda
Levitin, Sharon Schwartz.
Local high school students::
Amy Jablin and Jeffrey
Gell represented the B'nai
B'rith Youth Organization, <'
while Joe Feldman at-
tended from the Hillel
Foundation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
Funds raised at the event
will benefit the Residential
Treatment Center in Israel,
which helps troubled chil-
dren. The success rate of the
center has gained interna-
tional recognition.
The centerpieces at the
luncheon were baskets of
food, which were donated to I
Yad Ezra later that day.

WOL DINNER

The Women's Orthodox
League (WOL) recently held
a meeting at the Plaza Hotel
in Southfield which drew
hundreds of women from
throughout metropolitan
Detroit. Dinner chairwomerii
Valerie Sandweiss and
Esther Stewart presided at
the program, which had an ,1
international theme. The
meal was followed by a per-
formance of the Bais Yaakov
Choir (also garbed in inter,
national attire) and a
musical presentation,
"Jewish Women Around the
World," written by Lisa
Ferstenfeld.
