DANNY RASKIN LOCAL COLUMNIST

large sign outside
reads "Grand Open-
ing," but has another
meaning . . . It is
really to signal the newly
added area for dining at
Jane's Place on Lahser, just
south of Civic Center Drive
(10 1/2 Mile Road.)
This is a good family
restaurant that has many
times bordered on the rim of
culinary imagination since
opening three years ago last
May.
People have often wondered
why Jane's Place, seating on-
ly 42, wasn't larger . . . The
answer was simple, no room
. . . On one side stood a wall
separating it and Majestic
Market . . . The other had an
operation called "Nuts Over
Yogurt."
Now the latter is no more
and a move was quickly made
by owners Jane Kladzyk and
barrister Marvin Berris to
parlay that sector into much
needed indoor seating of
another 36.
Nine hundred additional
square feet now make up the
enlarged dining at Jane's
Place, whose total has grown
to 2,400 . . . The new area is
much different from the other
. . . like apples and oranges
. . . but still retains that same
cozy, intimate atmosphere
Jane's Place has been known
for besides its food and low
prices.
Modernistic surroundings
encompass the entire new sec-
tor of black and white tile
floor, art deco quarter pillars
with pink neon tubing,
arched mirror, a lot of Jane
and Marvin's resourceful
decorating ideas . . . Even the
window blinds that go up
from the bottom were design-
ed by Jane, who also makes
the baskets, vases with dried
flowers, bird cages, etc., that
are always for sale.
Along one wall is a long
counter with pink lighting
behind glass brick that holds
a statue and adornments .. .
Framed art is everywhere .. .
A brick fixture is flanked by
tile on the wall and an arch-
way entrance separating the
two rooms is closed off when
private parties are held in the
recently added section . . .
The only semblance to Jane's
Place's original dining sector
is a small patch of the same
carpeting where a wall had
been taken away.

A Small Addition Provides
Two Looks In One Place

THE JEWISH NEWS

The original room has a
quaint, country-style at-
mosphere with its statue of a
sheep wearing a cloth bonnet,
bird cages, print table cover-
ings (new room has solids)
and carpeted floor.
Jane's outdoor "farm" is
still there, but has changed
with the weather . . . Now the
sheep, cows, deer, etc., are all
properly clothed and her
ducks wear bonnets . . . After
all, she says, they may not be
real, but the cold weather
sure is . . . Jane is looking for
a fur cap to put on the cow .. .
The outdoor showpiece that
folks loved to look at while
dining on the patio, with its
squirrels, sheep, rabbits, deer
and birds, will soon be
decorated for the holidays .. .
Mr. Scarecrow and pumpk-
kins have been there but corn-
ing will be an igloo and
penguins.
Jane's Place is the kind of
restaurant you look for with
casualness and good home-
cooked food on which Jane
and Marvin are high . . . Its
house specialty is Jane's pon-
zi, her own concoction, large
turnovers stuffed with 12
varieties of tasty fillings .. .
Ponzi is short for ponzeratti,
the little ravioli-like stuffed
food of Italy . . . She liked the
concept and thus was born
her dining invention . . . they
are heavy sellers especially at
lunchtime.
It is a six-day operation that
formerly opened at 11 a.m.
but now with the new room,
unlocks the doors Monday-
Friday at 8 a.m. to serve
bagels, homemade muffins
and coffee ... No eggs or
breakfast specials . . . just
light "get going" type of fare
. . . Evenings, Monday-
Thursday till 9 and Friday
and Saturday to 10, have
customers enjoying interna-
tional specials, changing off
regularly to foods of various
countries but always main-
taining homemade American
cuisine, including Jane's
sweet-and-sour turkey meat-
balls, pies, noted brownies
and so many other goodies,
including standards like
salmon patties, roast chicken,
vegetarian dishes, chicken
stir fry, fish and chips, etc.
People love the intimacy,
home cooking, informality
and low prices at Jane's Place,
which has become one of the
more popular little spots on

the Northwest . . . This may
be a small operation, but the
reception is large for its 14
different types of tea, seven
kinds of coffee, four flavored
cocoas, cappuccino, espresso
and many varieties of im-
aginative food preparations to
go with its home-cooked
regulars.
touches
are
Jane's
everywhere . . . Even the
men's restroom has them
with painted plates, floral
designs in planters, wallpaper
on the walls and doors . . . and
so very clean.
Of much importance is that
one or the other or both were
always there . . .Besides cook-
ing so many things, Jane is
also the perfect hostess with
an effervescent smile that
makes people feel welcome
. . . Marvin does his share, too,
greeting people and going in-
to the kitchen to cook.
Customers wanted more
room at Jane's Place and have
finally gotten it . . . The at-
titude is a good one that Jane
and Marvin don't sit on theirL ,

laurels . . . From the time
they opened, every day was
another "lets do this" ,
occasion.
You might call it Jane's
Places now instead of Jane's
Place . . . The new addition is,
about as close to the other
dining area as the astronauts
who walk in space are to
Earth . . . But one thing both
rooms have in common
besides the same menu . .
the cozy, homespun at-_,
mosphere has never left.

MODERN DELICATES-
SEN, one of the oldest names

in the local dining game, is
now open for dinner at its se-
cond locale, Greenfield just
south of 1-696 . . . New hours
of 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday
Saturday takes in both lunch
and dinner at the spot former-
ly occupied by Deli Unique,
and before it Northgate,
Katz's, Joey's, Danny's.
