Even the Persian Gulf War, as enthusiastic and aroused as we all were, was fought on our televisions. It became better TV than a mini-series. The endings almost always ended with a victory. Still, nobody's house in Farmington Hills was burn- ed to the ground. A SCUD missile did not slam into an office building in Southfield. We weren't there. The Soviet emigres were encouraged to learn that in Israel, Memorial Day for Israel's military dead is seen as a somber, haunting day. And when the sirens wail through the cities, it's hard to hold back the tears. Israelis know battle, and few don't have family members or friends who have lost lives over the years. Perhaps the war we're fighting here in America is a battle to keep the family functional, to seal ourselves off from drug abuse and the day-to-day brutality of our cities. We're becoming a society that is numb to an- other youth shot dead in the street, another abused child, another crime, another day. Maybe we're veterans of this new sort of American life, which has cheapened human lives. Perhaps we've been fortunate that it's only been the American military, that's fought a war. They've done it for the rest of us, so that we can live as a free democracy. And we can't lose sight of that fact. It's too bad that the best social consciousness most of us can muster to honor our veterans is that big sale. Hopefully, nobody's death in the Persian Gulf or in Viet- , nam or Korea or Europe was ) translated into a 10 percent markdown at the mall. The Soviet Jews in the Northgate clubhouse couldn't understand that. And they are right. It doesn't make sense. ❑ Delivery in time for the Holidays on all in stock merchandise and select special orders. DEJA JEW page 7 ish texts with delegates — an excellent example of adding a traditional component to the proceedings. But federations move slow- ly and are the antithesis of the kind of bold, experimen- tal programs needed to jump- start a generation of young Jews who know little — and care less — about their her- itage. What federations do well is raise funds. So let them con- tinue to bring in the dollars, and invest them in smaller, more creative institutions with a proven track record in revitalizing Jewish life, or new organizations with ex- citing ideas. That means giv- ing big money to agencies -, schools, camps and outreach groups outside of federation control, and that may be a scary prospect to some. But the alternative is even more frightening. We can't afford to wait until next year's= GA to hear about how the blue-ribbon Task Force on Jewish Identity is moving steadily toward a consensus, position. We've saved Soviet Jews and Syrian Jews and Ethiopi-, an Jews with great speed and skill. Now we've got to save ourselves — and our children and grandchildren. ❑ Germany Investigates WINTER 1992 benetton and Sisley Collections.
