against the wall. He cursed
himself for being so blind.
Shira was part of this kib-
butz, and it was part of her.
He could dangle promises of
her own car, designer
clothes and all the tempta-
tions of America before her.
She would still choose Kfar
Dena. Even the white stones
of Jerusalem would chill her
heart.
He ran a finger along her
cheek, and she brushed it
away. Benny's son would
come back next month and
fall in love with her twirling
hair and gypsy eyes.
That evening, they skip-
ped the lecture on ar-
chaeological excavations at
the Temple Mount.
Instead, they walked
along the date groves and
watched the full moon rise
over the hills of Jordan. The
lights of another kibbutz
twinkled down at them.
Avner held Shira in his
arms and felt her content-
ment ripple through him.
Later, as she curled
against the wall, he quietly
dressed and pulled a small
duffel bag from under the
bed.
She moaned softly as he
kissed her.
The night air was moist
and thick with mosquitoes.
He swatted at them and
moved quickly.
The kibbutz would go on
as if he'd never been there.
Years from now, if he ever
returned, he would find date
palms swaying in the breeze,
apples ripening in the or-
chards. Shira with the
laughing eyes would be
singing songs and telling
stories to her children. Ari's
children.
And there would be
turkeys.
He drew a knife from his
bag as he slipped into the
coop. They huddled together,
heads tucked down. A few
squawked as he approached.
He knew which ones he
wanted.
Two big, mean toms,
fathers of half the brood. He
silently slit their throats
before they could wake the
others. The blood spilled
over Avner's hand, and he
wanted to retch. But he put
them into a sack and carried
them out the door.
Benny's apartment was on
the edge of the kibbutz, the
finest, newest section for the
oldest members.
Avner took the dead
turkeys from the sack and
laid them across the
doorstep.
He washed off his hands
with water from his
canteen.
The moon Nvas still high
and lit up the road ahead.
He could hitch a ride to
Beit Shean and be in
Jerusalem by morning.
There he would decide what
to do next. ❑

For Grenade Attack
Jerusalem (JTA) — Police
are searching for the person
who hurled an Israeli army-
issue grenade into a
Jerusalem marketplace,
killing a 70-year-old Arab
shopkeeper and wounding
12 others.
And they have not ruled
out the possibility that the
perpetrator is Jewish.
An Arab shopkeeper said
he saw two men loitering
near the site of the blast in
Jerusalem's Old City shortly
before the incident. He
suspected that one of the
men threw the grenade; both
quickly disappeared from
the scene immediately after
the explosion.
A reporter at the news-
paper Hadashot received a
call warning of the attack
from a man claiming to rep-
resent the right-wing Kach
movement, Israel Radio re-
ported. The same person
called to claim responsibility
for Kach after the grenade
was hurled at the Butchers
Market.
News reports said the
caller linked the attack to
the second anniversary of
the slaying of Kach leader
Rabbi Meir Kahane in New
York.
A police spokesman said
investigators were looking
into this aspect of the case,
but refused to say at this
state whether it was the only
or the likeliest lead.
