Benny's not too good a
listener."
By 10 o'clock, Shira's
fingers were flying over the
keyboard in her air-
conditioned office. The
temperature was inching
past 90 degrees, and the
stench in the coops was
thick enough to smear on
the walls.
"Micki. It's been six
months." Avner wiped his
forehead with his hat and
leaned against the pen.
Friend Micki poured a drink
of water and lit a cigarette.
"I've talked to Benny. You
know he doesn't like you."
"Because I'm a spoiled
American."
Micki laughed. "That's
what he says. But really, it's
because of Shim."
Avner lifted his eyebrows.
"Isn't he a little old for her?"
"Not him, stupid. He has
a son."
Avner whistled.
"You didn't know?"
"I've never seen him."
"He's been studying
agriculture at Rehovot. He's
supposed to come back next
month and show us how we
should really be doing
things. And, according to
Benny, he's supposed to
marry Shira."
"Does she know?"
"Avner, they grew up
together. In the children's
houses. Like brother and
sister. It's never even cross-
ed her mind. Still, Benny's
always believed that it
would change when Shira
finished the army and Ari
came back from school. In-
stead, you came along."
"So I'll never get out of
this coop."
Micki inhaled deeply and
coughed. "Not as long as
Benny's head of the work
committee. And he's been
head for 10 years."
After lunch, Shira and
Avner went back to Avner's
room to nap until the heat
of the day passed.
"Come with me, Shira,"
Avner whispered into her
neck. He nibbled at her ear
and felt her quiver. "I've got
to get away from those
stinking birds."
Shira closed her eyes and,
despite Avner's efforts,
drifted off to sleep. "Abba
will talk to Benny," she
murmured.
Avner studied her as she
lay beside him, squeezed
