who played such a vital role
in organizing the Jewish peo-
ple on their way to statehood.
Following each display case
— with explanations written
in both Hebrew and English
— visitors are also following
Herzl, from his childhood in
Budapest to his law school
days in Vienna, his years as
a journalist and playwright —
and finally, his evolution as
an ardent Zionist committed
to the idea of a Jewish
homeland in Palestine.
The emerging activist is
already evident in the display
devoted to his university
years in Vienna. For instance,
there's the draft of the letter
he wrote in 1883 resigning
from the Albia Students'
Association after the
members had shown anti-
Semitic tendencies. And there
is the poem in which he
wrote: "My heart yearns to
cure/the searing pains of the
world . . ."
The youthful poet went on
to become a prolific writer, a
playwright and also the Paris
correspondent for the Neue
Free Presse of Vienna from
1891 to 1895. He reported on

, key events of those years, in-
cluding the Dreyfus trial
which unleashed a wave of
anti-Semitism in France and
deeply affected the young
journalist.
The idea for a Jewish state
was already taking hold. On
(' Feb. 14, 1896, Herzl publish-
' ed his book, Der Judenstaat
(The Jewish State) in which
he argued emphatically that
the only real solution for Jews
worldwide was a Jewish state.

Included in the displays is
a page from Herzl's diary ex-
pressing his elation with the
first copies of the book.
"My life may now take a
new turn," he wrote. There
are the various first editions
of the book in translation —
in German, Hebrew, English,
Bulgarian, Russian, Roma-
nian and French.
By now, the visitor has
become immersed in Herzl's
life. His thoughts in the diary,
the letters and photos — all
help bring the man to life.
But perhaps the most vivid
way of evoking his presence in
this quiet museum is the
Herzl Room, a display which
restores his study in Vienna.
