=MliMUIMED
a sudden protest as this. If
we bring more police, we
fear (the protestors) will get
more violent. But from now
on, each time there is a
death, we must expect the
same reaction."
This was the most
vociferous protest yet by
Israel's radical right, who
are dispirited by their June
electoral defeat and who fear
that Mr. Rabin is com-
promising their security
through his offers of ter-
ritorial withdrawal.
Indeed, the events of the
weekend — on both sides of
the divide — may be just a
taste of things to come for
the Israeli leader, already
facing tests of strength from
his left-wing and religious
coalition parties, in his quest
for seemingly elusive ac-
cords with Israel's Arab pro-
tagonists.
According to reports from
Arab sources, there is grow-
ing Iranian support for the
Islamic fundamentalist
Hamas movement, an event
which may pose the most se-
rious challenge yet to PLO
chairman Yassir Arafat.
Hamas is thought to com-
mand a clear majority of Pa-
lestinian support in the
Gaza Strip and the backing
of up to 40 percent of those in
the West Bank, providing
the most cogent explanation
for the reluctance of the Pa-
lestinian negotiators to ac-
cept Israel's offer of elections
in the territories.
Amid reports of recently
forged structural links bet-
ween Hezbollah and Hamas,
Amir Taheri, a respected
Iranian journalist now liv-
ing in exile in Paris, re-
ported that a Hamas office,
enjoying "diplomatic status"
and regarded as an
"embassy," will open in
Teheran.
He also reported that the
Iranian regime had agreed
to pump more cash into the
coffers of the fundamentalist
movement and provide
military training for its
fighters.
,
According to sources, the
Hamas delegation, headed
by Mousa Marzouk, recently
met Iran's supreme spiritual
leader, Ayatollah Ali
' Khamenei, who reaffirmed
r his country's "honorable
mission of spreading the
revolution around the world.
Mohsen Rezai, commander
of the Iranian Revolutionary
Guards which supports Hez-
bollah fighters in Lebanon,
also met the Hamas repre-
sentatives and promised to
give "top priority to pro-
viding the Palestinian in-
tifada with training and
logistical support." 0
