On Nov. 1, the Washington
Post published an article by

1 free-lancer Robert Friedman
in which he charged, in part,
_ that the American Israel
r Public Affairs Committee,
Washington's preeminent
1 pro-Israel lobby, had used a
secret memo to orchestrate
r‘ - ' the dismissal of Andrew
Silow Carroll as editor of the
Washington Jewish Week.
The memo had suggested
that Mr. Carroll identified
with detractors of Israel.
In a letter in the Post last

) Saturday, Mayer Mitchell
) and Thomas Dine, respec-
tively, AIPAC's chairman

that AIPAC was concerned
with the Jewish Week "not
because of its opinions on
peace issues, but because of
its inaccurate reporting
about AIPAC." They assert
that AIPAC was disturbed
about Mr. Carroll because he
had spoken on a panel whose
"purpose was to discuss

"I'm in a strange kind of
agreement with CAMERA,"
conceded Mr. Dinges. "I'd
like more coverage of Arab
countries, too, but we can't
do it because of budget re-
strictions."
Arab-American groups,
said Mr. Dinges, have com-
plained that NPR's coverage
tends to perpetuate negative
,stereotypes of Arabs.
They've never accused us of
ill will."
