NO EXCUSES page 30 conceded. But today's blacks are different. The ADL survey found that while fewer white Americans than ever agree with the state- ment "Jews are more loyal to Israel than America," this is not the case in the black commu- nity. Professor Stokes says blacks do not understand Jews' un- conditional support of Israel. In part it's because blacks iden- tify with other oppressed groups — which in this case they understd to be the they Palestinians. The other issue is the Israel-South Africa con- nection, which "leads blacks to ue suspicious, at best," Pro- fessor Stokes says. Like Mr. Gad-Harf, Mr. Lobenthal says the survey shows the need for increased black-Jewish dialogue. And like Professor Stokes, he acknowl- edges that the two communi- ties do not always understand each other. r. David Schoem, a University of Michigan dean, has taught a num- ber of courses on black- Jewish relations. While I concerned about the survey's 1 results, he's frustrated that the positive aspects of dialogue are rarely publicized. He wishes ,..booth communities would "focus more on areas of shared inter- est than overfocus on areas of "disagreement." He also says Jews have much more to fear from right- wing fundamentalists than blacks. 'The black community is not the community Jews should be concerned about in terms of anti-Semitism," he says. "I'm not condoning anti- ( Semitism, but it's a matter of educating," added former AJCommittee dialogue group co-chairman Frank Sklarsky. Mr. Sklarsky believes the survey reflects a feeling of gen- eral despair among blacks. Mr. Sklarsky expressed sup- port for more black-Jewish di- alogue, though with the understanding that group lead- ers bring the message back home to their own communi- ties. And while he feels strongly that blacks are obligated to ad- dress anti-Semitism within their own community, he asks Jews to take a good look at themselves, too. "What I'd like to see now is a survey on prejudice within Lthe Jewish community," he says. ❑ ultimate perfection does not include any action or good conduct, but only knowl- edge.
