rights. Its girls medley relay
team set an AAU state
record in 1951. "Minna Kl-
ing (then Weisenfeld) went
to the Maccabiah Games in
Israel in 1953 and placed 4th
or 5th in several events,"
Coach Ratner recalls.
Says Sarah Rosner, "We
got a chance to swim in
areas we never would have
seen — black Ys, Highland
Park Junior College." But
Mrs. Rosner also recalls
Coach Ratner's priorities:
"He always insisted our
schoolwork was first. And he
insisted on good diet."
Dr. Alvin Lappan, a
California dentist, was the
only former team member
from out of town to make the
reunion. Jerry Miller, a
Detroit police detective,
called Coach Ratner from a
hunting trip in northern
Michigan.
Leonore Weiss described
the reunion as "wonderful.
It was just a very special
feeling. Coach Ratner was
only here for four years and
he had such a wonderful im-
pact on our lives." ❑

Dutch Royalty
Visits Shul

Amsterdam (JTA) — The
Dutch royal family made a
stop at Curacao's old syn-
agogue last week during an
official visit to the Nether-
lands Antilles island.
Queen Beatrix and Prince
Claus were accompanied by
their three sons, Crown
Prince Willem Alexander,
Johan and Constantijn, dur-
ing their visit to the Mikveh
Israel Emanuel Synagogue
in Willemstad, the Carib-
bean island's capital.
A thanksgiving service
was held at the synagogue
for the royal family's visit in
order to "express the pro-
found feelings of gratitude of
the Jewish community on
the island of Curacao toward
the House of Orange," as the
royal family is known.
The synagogue claims it is
the oldest Jewish prayer
house in the Western
Hemisphere, founded in
1656.
Curacao is home to the
oldest Jewish settlement in
the New World. Twelve
Sephardic Jewish families
who had fled Spain for the
Netherlands arrived on the
island in 1650.
The Jewish community
now numbers only 500 or
600.
