American Maccabi Youth
Games in Baltimore in Aug-
ust. "He's a strong, hard-
nosed player who plays hard
and has his own mind," Eps-
tein said. Ilya was a hard-
working backup goalie who
should see more action next
year.
Epstein described Green-
berg as "a nice, quiet kid.
He's had his ups and downs
during the season . . . He's
working hard in school and
that has taken away from
( some of his playing out
there."
Shulimovich, who scored
14 goals, is "a superstar-
type player," Epstein said.
"He can dribble past most of
the players, he has a very
good shot. He comes to play.
He's an individual — on and
off the field. He has an
artist-type personality and
he plays that way, like an ar-
tist would. He can do things
that other players his age
can't do."
Epstein called Sweetwine
one of Berkley's most im-
proved players this season.
"He's come a long way from
the begining of the season.
-, He played Maccabi in
Baltimore for Detroit. He's
matured into a fine player
for us and we count on him
to mark some of the best
players on the other team."
Howard, another Maccabi
competitor, was the only
) freshman to start this
season. Epstein said that
Howard "will develop into
one of the best players we'll
ever have."
Phillips is "a very good
' player," Epstein said. "He
will develop into one of our
better players as well."
But Baum was clearly the
team's star. "That's our
secret weapon," Sweetwine
,, said. "You just get him the
> ball and he goes and scores."
Epstein described Baum
as "a successful guy on the
soccer field and in life and in
school. You know that about
him right away. So he's
brought that aspect about
him with him. He is one of
the leaders on the team
because of that, because he
produces and he's a smart
guy."
For Baum, the soccer team
was particularly important,
on and off the field. "I won't
forget this team because
this team helped me to
make friends here and
helped my adaptation here,"
he said.
