Michigan State University
Professor Curtis Stokes be-
lieves that blacks and Jews
have a very different under-
standing of terminology. For
blacks, racism is a contempo-
rary phenomenon connected
with power and "the ability to
oppress." Under such a defini-
tion, the Rev. Louis Far-
rakhan's comments about
Judaism as a "gutter religion"
might be construed as unac-
ceptable, but not anti-Semitic.
Jews, however, are not like-
ly to overlook the Rev.
Farrakhan's remarks simply
because he is not part of the
black power structure.
The result is stilted commu-
nication which Professor Stokes
believes may in part explain
the results of the new ADL sur-
vey. Blacks may be frustrated
with Jews, he says, but it
doesn't mean they're going to
start burning down Jewish
homes.
Like the black community
of which he is part, Professor
Stokes defines racism, or anti-
Sernitism, as the ability to
translate hostility into action.
