With Extreme Grief And Sorrow, We Announce The Passing Of Our
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, And Great-Grandmother Of Blessed Memory
MRS. MORRIS (BESSIE) YASSKY
OCTOBER 9, 1992
;JF Approves Rules
For New Powers
1
_,
4"ew York (JTA) — The
r;ouncil of Jewish Federa-
ions has approved new
;laws that will turn the
rnbrella organization into a
arliament of its member
aderations.
;=taut that small step of
.rganizational reorganiza-
ion represents a giant leap
Or the concept of an Ameri-
an Jewish community
u rger than the sum of its
arts.
Much as the U.S. Constitu-
ion put issues of federalism
.nd states rights at the
enter of political discussion
or two centuries, the
l estructuring of the council
[I. only the beginning of what
likely to be a protracted
.ebate on who should control
he money raised by local
'moderations.
Should the money be
I llocated by the community
'nat raised it? Or should the
reeds of the North American
l iewish community as a
'hole dictate priorities, just
Ls
, the decisions on how to
pend the funds passed on to
srael are made by central
1 )odies?
1, The federal idea — what is
eing referred to by federa-
-gn leaders as "fair share"
,--ayment to meet
continental respon-
ibilities" — was developed
0 recent years in response
o the massive exodus of
1
Vi ews from the former Soviet
Jnion.
'Federations created a for-
nula for allocating among
Ihemselves the responsibili-
for resettling immigrants
America and for guar-
nteeing $900 million worth
f loans for immigrants to
fael.
These allocations were
ased on the size of the
ommunities and the
mount they were able to
raise for their federation
ampaigns.
But the new institu-
tionalization of the prin-
.
Jples of fair share and col-
lective responsibility comes
l it a crucial time for the CJF,
I Ls it shifts its focus away
rom helping imperiled Jews
',:ound the world and toward
' 1-ie issue of ensuring the
the of American Jewry
n the face of rampant
a ssimilation and intermar-
1. jiage.
In addressing that issue,
`lie federations face fewer
Jearcut answers and a level
I li controversy perhaps jarr-
ing for institutions much
more comfortable working
within a consensus.
With its new form of
governance, the CJF has
become, arguably, the most
democratic American Jew-
ish organization, and the
closest the Jews of the
United States have come to a
national Jewish congress.
The new CJF board of
delegates consists of repre-
sentatives of its nearly 200
member federations, with
each delegation reflecting
the size of the community
and its campaign. This
replaces a board of directors
which, while striving for
geographic representation,
was truly accountable only
to itself.
And the newly formed ex-
ecutive committee, a body of
about 50 individuals
overseeing CJF's day-to-day
operations, will be more
representative than its
predecessor under the old
bylaws. The new committee
will have drawn from small,
medium and large federa-
tions from each of four re-
gions in the United States
and Canada.
Twenty Arrested
At Soccer Match
Amsterdam (JTA) — Police
arrested 20 people during a
soccer match here last
weekend after it erupted in
anti- Semitic and racist cat-
calls.
Supporters of the Rotter-
dam team Feyenoord made
hissing sounds to imitate
Nazi gas chambers and
shouted "Jews" at members
of the Amsterdam team
Ajax.
Against the background of
growing anti-Semitic and
racist expressions at Euro-
pean soccer matches, an at-
tempt at a response was
made by supporters of both
teams, who distributed
flyers against racism.
In recent years, groups of
soccer fans throughout
Europe have been infiltrated
by extreme right-wing,
racist and fascist
movements. For some
reason, the Ajax soccer
team, which has no Jews in
its lineup, is known as the
"Jews Club."
Holland has no law to pre-
vent such expressions.
The daughter of a rosh yeshiva, she was a very great lady whose heart and spirit inspired us
all. Mrs. Yassky was a remarkable woman who had great insight into human nature. Her
strengths were many. Together with her husband, the late Morris A. Yassky, she worked for
the Zionist cause long before the State of Israel became a reality.
Actively contributing to Yeshivah Beth Yehudah, the American Red Magen David,
Hadassah, Temple Nir Tamid, ORT, The Hebrew National Orphan Home and B'nai B'rith,
she will be greatly missed by all who knew her and respected her for her independence, percep-
tion, and her great beauty. She was a very warm and gracious lady.
Her interest, understanding, and compassion captured the imagination of all who came in
contact with her. Together with her husband, the late Morris A. Yassky of Blessed memory,
they raised tremendous amounts of money for Israel and for many other Jewish organizations.
She was always an unselfish and devoted friend to those in need. She will
always be a model and inspiration for her children, her grandchildren,
and her great-grandchildren and all who knew her.
