hen Serbs began
"ethnic cleansing"
of Bosnians in the
former Yugoslavia,
the Jewish Community
-Council of Detroit responded
in a joint statement with the
Council of Islamic Organiza-
tions of Michigan condemn-
.,ing the killings.
Now the JCCouncil is ask-
ing for help for the Bosnians
in a more tangible form —
clothing, blankets and -non-
perishable food items.
Students of Temple Kol Ami
Religious School are collec-
( ting over-the-counter chil-
medication as part of
i
',the effort.
i ' Tax-deductable donations
can be dropped off until Nov.
25 at United Hebrew
Schools/Agency For Jewish
Education at 21550 W. 12
Mile Road in Southfield.
The items will reach Bos-
nians by a privately con-
tracted container ship.
"It's difficult to get in-
volved with relief of this sort
unless you're confident you
will be helping the people —
'that items will get to the
right people," said Jeannie
Weiner, president of Coun-
1 . "Our work with the Bos-
nian community in Detroit
and their connections has
calmed that fear."
> The JCCouncil and Coun-
cil of Islamic Organizations
hope relief reaches Bosnians
before winter becomes
brutal. Tens of thousands of
! Bosnians remain homeless
due to the civil war.
"It's a unique situation
working with the Muslims,"
Ms. Weiner said. "And as we
=3. pproach Thanksgiving, this
effort is really ap-
propriate." El

Riots Erupt
Over Dig Find
Jerusalem (JTA) — Just as
Jerusalem police were try-
ing to restore quiet in the
Old City following a grenade
attack, riots broke out in the
western part of the capital.
The demonstrators were
not Palestinians but
haredim, or fervently Or-
thodox Jews, who were pro-
,t,esting archaeological digs
on alleged gravesites.
The digs are being carried
Lout in the French Hill
neighborhood, in an effort to
save archaeological findings
before a new road is built in
the neighborhood.
