Police Stop
Demonstration

Bonn (JTA) — A heavy
police presence managed to
prevent some 2,000 neo-
Nazis from demonstrating at
the military cemetery of
Halbe, south of Berlin,
where 40,000 soldiers, many
of them from SS units, are
buried.
Twelve neo-Nazis were ar-
rested and dozens of
weapons confiscated.
This followed a demonstra-
tion in Bonn, where 100,000
eople marched to protest
right-wing attacks on for-
eigners.
Local police in the state of
Brandenburg were backed
up by federal riot police
units and a border guard
nit to counter the neo-
Nazis.
Much of the town of Halbe
was blocked to regular
traffic as police checked
identification documents,
looking for neo-Nazi ac-
1ivists from various coun-
tries.
Some 500 neo-Nazis at-
tempted to demonstrate in
the nearby town of Koenigs.
But there again they were
stopped by large numbers of
police, who warned them to
disperse before breaking
' to their ranks.
In the northern city of
Hamburg, 19 neo-Nazis were
,rrested near a war
memorial. They carried Nazi
banners, a violation of Ger-
man law, to mark a national
-4 ay of mourning for the vic-
- tinas of wars and violence.
That occasion was other-
wise observed peacefully in
several state ceremonies, at
which high-ranking officials
issued sharp warnings
'against the continued neo-
Nazi attacks on foreigners.

Washington (JTA) — Israeli
resident Chaim Herzog
met with President Bush
and said afterward he an-
icipates no change in -U.S.
policy toward Israel when
the president leaves office in
January.
'Mr. Herzog said he visited
Bush to pay his respects
and to "express our ap-
Lpreciation" for his sponsor-
ship of the Middle East
peace talks.
He also said he expressed
ur•atitude to Mr. Bush for his
leadership in the Persian
Gulf War, which he said
helped curb dangerous ag-
gression and enhanced
Israel's security.
