because no one knows what
you're talking about."
Blending three cultures
on a soccer field was a ma-
jor challenge for Epstein. He
found fundamental dif-
ferences between the North
American, South American
and European styles of play.
"The South American guy
wants to dribble you and
dribble you," Epstein said.
And the guy we have
(Baum) can do that. The
Russian guys like to pass it
with each other and like to
keep it to each other."
Although some of Berk-
ley's American and Russian
players had played together
before, Epstein explained
that "the Russians are a
close-knit group on the team
and they stick together.
They'll travel together. They
have their own philosophy
on how to do things, apart
from everybody else.
"It's hard to blend them
with the other players
because they feel that they
are different and they want
to hold on to each other."
Berkovich explained that
"in Europe they play more
physical, they play more
defensively. Here, they play
more offensive, kind of kick-
and-run . . . They try to pull
a lot of offside traps." He
said the team's style evolv-
ed into a blend of the
American and European
games.
Epstein, a former Univer-

sity of Colorado player, was
a successful coach at Pied-
mont High School in the
San Francisco Bay area. He
moved to the Detroit area
last year and began
coaching in Birmingham's
YMCA program. He'll also
coach Berkley's girls soccer
team in the spring.
The team's Jewish players
included Baum, the Brazil-
ian exchange student who
will return home halfway

through the school year. The
four Russian Jews include
Berkovich, a defender, plus
his brother Ilya, a sopho-
more goalkeeper, junior
defender Denis Greenberg
and sophomore midfielder
Igor Shulimovich.
The American Jewish c
players included Sweetwine,
a center-midfielder, fresh-
man Scott Howard and
freshman midfielder Segev
Phillips. To add to the team's
diversity, Phillips was born 7i
in Israel and lived there for
eight years before moving to
the United States.
