hey went to swimming
pools where no whites
or Jews had gone
before. And as young
teen-agers in the 1948-1952
pre-civil rights era, they
may not have fully
understood what their ac-
tions meant. After all, they
were just competing against
another swim team.
Now doctors, lawyers and
engineers, the members of
the Jewish Community
Center swim team, circa
1950, have held several reu-
nions over the last decade.
Last weekend's was special,
however, because they were
reunited with their coach,
Emmanuel Ratner.
Stockbroker Sarah Rosner
used frequent-flyer mileage
to bring in their favorite
coach. Ex-teacher Lenore
Weiss housed him for the
weekend. About a dozen
former swimmers and their
spouses met to relive old
times and pay tribute to the
coach who touched their
lives and broke down bar-
riers in Detroit with his
swimmers.
Mr. Ratner returned to his
native New York after the
1952 season and went into
business. He remained a
swimming official in the
New York area until the ear-
ly 1980s.
"Somehow, he touched
every one of those kids," said
Joel Rosner, Sarah's hus-
band. "They still love him
today."

Sarah Rosner and
Manny Ratner

Mr. Ratner had coached at
City University of New York
and in the Navy during,'
World War II. He was
brought to Detroit by JCC
coach Ben Silverberg.
Using Amateur Athletic
Union meets as a vehicle,
Mr. Ratner crossed racial
and ethnic lines. His JCC
swim teams were among the
first Jews to compete at a
black YMCA, at the Wo-,_
men's City Club and at the
Detroit Athletic Club.
Under AAU sponsorship,
the team hosted the first in-
tegrated swim meet in the 'r=
Detroit area.
Based at the Jewish Com-
munity Center on Woodward'=
and Holbrook, the team did
more than work for civil
