different parts of the com-
munity," ,Mr. Krupnikov
added.
"We also are preparing to
conduct a census of the Jews
in Riga to learn more about
ourselves. Even though we
lose around 500 a year to
aliyah, our population re-
mains the same because more
and more people are surfacing
and identifying as Jews," he
said.
The community receives
considerable support from
organizations in the United
States, France and Israel, in-
cluding the Allied Jewish
Campaign-supported Joint
Distribution Committee and
the Jewish Agency for Israel.
Riga Jewry also raises around
$30,000 per year to support
the normal operations and
special programs of the
Jewish day school and
kindergarten, the Jewish
center, the Jewish hospital,
summer camps and many
other programs.

The Jewish Agency pres-
ence in Riga is to establish
contacts with Jews to en-
courage and facilitate aliyah.
The Agency also runs sum-
mer camps and works with
the directors of the Kinnor
Ensemble, comprised of a
choir and musicians and
based in the Jewish center.
The center also hosts the
Rachamim Society, which
provides hot meals once a
week to around 40 senior
adults. The group, which runs
on a $700 yearly budget, also
runs a meals-on-wheels pro-
gram for home-bound older
individuals.
"Among our group of 125
Americans, everyone pitched
in a few dollars for the society
— a total of over $2,000," said
Gil Ashendorf, "That will
allow them to serve three
times as many people this
year."

In addition, Riga's main
synagogue boasts daily mi-
nyans and a Reform congrega-
tion meets at the center.
The Memorial Foundation
has helped strengthen the
community in Riga by fun-
ding programs for study in
Israel, exposing children to
Jewish culture and helping
marginally affiliated Jews
learn about Judaism through
home study and seminars. In
addition, the Foundation
works with the local Jewish
day school to develop special
educational materials and is
assisting the community in a
project to reassess and
publish a book on its history.

all of Latvia's 93,000 pre-war
Jews were killed by the Nazis,
