IGA, Latvia — As re-

cently as four years
ago, the Jews of Latvia
were hiding their
Judaism and suffering from
the state-sponsored anti-
Semitism of the Soviet Union.
One revolution and an in-
dependent republic later, a
group of Detroiters visited the
most well-organized com-
munity in the former Soviet
Union — as rated by the New
York-based Memorial Found-
ation for Jewish Culture.
"I was totally impressed
with how far they have come
in such a very short time,"
said Michael Crane, who just
returned from the United
Jewish Appeal's Young
Leadership Chazak Mission
to Riga, Moscow and Israel.
"The Jewish community of
Latvia is a cohesive unit, and
they are proud of their
history."
The mission, chaired by
David Victor and Stacey
Crane, took 23 Detroiters on
pre-missions to Riga and St.
Petersburg, later joining with
the 900-strong national mis-
sion in Israel, Oct. 21-Nov. 1.
"It gave us an opportunity
to witness a dramatic chapter
in Jewish history, the rebirth
of a community in Riga and
the beginning of new life in
Israel," Mr. Victor said.

Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit. He participated in the
UJA Chazak Young
Leadership Mission.

Nearly 200 Russian ohm
accompanied the mission
from Moscow to Israel.
"It was amazing to be with
them just as they were begin-
ning their new lives in
Israel," Mrs. Crane said. "The
contrast between their lives
and ours is startling. While
we were able to make deci-
sions about traveling to the
former USSR, to Israel and
back to America, these people
were leaving behind everyone
and everything they knew to
start new lives in a new land
and with a language many of
them don't even understand."
Riga's 20,000-member Jew-
ish community recently was
cited by the Memorial Found-
ation for its high degree of
organization and accom-
plishment.
"Riga was chosen as a
model Jewish community as
a demonstration of what ac-
tually can be done to build a
strong Jewish cultural life
where none existed," said Dr.
Jerry Hochbaum, executive
vice president of the Founda-
tion. "The community, which
has a strong lay and profes-
sional leadership, identified
the needs and we developed
programs to answer them."
Among those leaders is
Gregory Krupnikov, presi-
dent of the Riga Jewish Com-
munity. He heads a council of
six that reviews the goals and
distribution of goods and
money within the community.
