nor do they approach other
students. He attributes that
to an adjustment period and
is confident the situation
will change. Sixth hour, the
Chaldean girls sit separate-
ly from the other students.
The Jewish students tend to
stick together as well.
Ashley Farber, Danny
London and Aaron Her-
skovic always sit together on
the top level of the forum
steps. They're all freshmen.
Aaron is adjusting to life in
a secular school — he at-
tended Hillel Day School. He
said he likes public school
better.
"I meet more people here,
different kinds of people,"
Aaron said.
He admitted he tends to
associate with mostly Jew-
ish kids because of his ties
with Hillel, United Syna-
gogue Youth and Camp
Tamarack.
Jessica Jonna and Adele
Bashi both work in their
parents' party stores late
into the evening. They're of-
ten tired — working more
hours and further away
from home than the other
students.
Most of Jessica's friends
are Chaldean. They were
raised together. However,
Jessica is often the only
Chaldean girl in many of
her classes.
"I was forced to make new
friends. It's hard. I'm a se-
nior," Jessica said. "But I'm
glad it happened."
The new friends exist in
Jessica's life primarily with-
in the framework of the
classroom.

sonal identities out of a cul-
ture that originally did not
have much place for them,"
Mr. Leider said. "I think this
puts some of the Chaldean
girls on the defense. They
have a harder edge and
sometimes don't want to
work with other students."
These cultural differences
create a challenge for Mr.
Leider — one he says he en-
joys.
Often he pairs students to
work on a project rather
than letting them choose
their own partners. It is a
way to break cliques and
break down barriers.
Prejudice, Mr. Leider be-
lieves, is taught by parents
and by society — children
are not prejudicial by na-
ture.
"There is a line from
South Pacific which sums it
all up, 'You have to be care-
fully taught to hate and
fear,' " Mr. Leider said. 0
IDF Soldiers
Killed In Exercise
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Five
soldiers of the Israel Defense
Force were killed and six
others wounded in an acci-
dent during a training exer-
cise in the Negev last week.
All were members of an
elite unit taking part in the
exercise. Two of the wound-
ed were reported to be in se-
rious condition at Beer-
sheba's Soroka Hospital.
Four sustained medium in-
juries, while one soldier was
released to go home after re-
ceiving first aid.
The incident occurred
when a missile was launch-
ed, apparently by accident,
for reasons not yet. clear. It
fell among the group of
soldiers.
The wounded were treated
immediately by an army
doctor who was present.
The IDF chief of staff, Lt.
Gen. Ehud Barak, ordered
an immediate halt to the use
of live ammunition during
training exercises
throughout the IDF.
The order, which was
made in consultation with
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin, who also holds the
defense portfolio, was to re-
main in force until the mid-
dle of next week, by which
time all standing regula-
tions were to be re-
examined.
The IDF chief also estab-
lished an investigating
commission.
