In Loving Memory of A TISKET A TASKET (313) 661,4789 an Francisco (JTA) — The average American Jewish drug addict is a perfectionist male from a family that re- veres achievement. Most likely, his drug of choice is cocaine or heroin. So says Dr. Jay Holder, a 45-year-old Lubavitch doctor who heads one of the world's only drug treatment centers offering Torah-based reha- bilitation, located in Miami. Yes, he said, there are lenty of Jewish drug ad- icts. He himself has dealt with hundreds. "It's the denial within the Jewish commun- ity that fans the flames of the problem," he said. Patients at the Exodus reatment Center — so named because it brings one "from the bondage of addic- tion to freedom" —stay in a Sabbath-observant and kosher environment anywhere from 30 days to wo years. Levels of religious obser- vance among the exclusively Jewish clients vary greatly. "The Exodus Treatment enter is not a yeshiva," Dr. older stressed. "It's a medical center with an em- hasis on Torah." The center is one of several smaller programs at the Village Treatment Center, the largest drug treatment center in Florida. Most Ex- odus clients grapple with -ug addiction, although in- viduals also struggle with ther addictions, including lcohol, food, gambling, work and sex. According to Dr. Holder, he success rate of Exodus as reached 87 percent. He ises the standard of clients ho abstain from their ad- iction, without relapse, for t least five years after reatment. The success rate t other centers, Holder aintained, is about 35 per- ent. e reason for the dispari- y, he believes, lies not in the rogram but in the patients. `We're dealing with a otally Jewish population, I nd there is that underlying t-wrenching desire to suc- .ed," he contended. Dr. Holder founded the xodus Treatment Center in 987 out of a belief that Jew- sh addicts needed a recov- ry program geared to their p iritual and religious sen- (- -hilities. Alcoholics Anonymous and ,- , other 12-step program meetings use language with a "Christian orientation," Dr. Holder observed. As a result, Jewish addicts may use those factors as ex- cuses not to use such pro- grams. "Any excuse that an addict can use to stay out of recovery he will use," he said. "It's the disease that wants to live." The Exodus approach in- corporates Torah values with the 12 steps followed by A.A. Both methods, Dr. Holder said, rely on the con- cept of a "higher power, something greater than us, an eye that sees and an ear that hears." His wife Carol and family "SHIVA BASKETS & TRAYS .. .
